Critical Temperature – Preparing Your Horse for Cold Weather

By Justin High, DVM

Right now I am sitting at my computer writing this, and it’s 72 degrees and 83 percent humidity. In less than 24 hours, the temperature is set to drop to 35 degrees with rain and 17 mph winds! I love Texas, but I love it more in the summertime. So, when it comes to preparing our horses for weather like this, we need to plan ahead, just as you would with your stall water, or pipes.

Cornbread Thinks: Breed ’em all…

The new pony continues to be an emerging dream. Robbie Boyce showed her in the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity Open, missed the semis by a half-point but made the John Deere Open finals. Needed more cow, but no penalties. They finished 11th for 3,900 some odd dollars. Earning her Certificate of Ability, she is now an official cutting horse.

Things to Look Out For in IRS Audits of Horse Activities

The U.S. House of Representatives is considering a resolution to impeach Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner John Koskinen for violation of the public trust, failing to comply with congressionally issued subpoenas and misleading the public over IRS practices of targeting conservative groups in audits. The last time Congress tried to remove a public official via impeachment was in 1876, when Secretary of War William Belknap was impeached on allegations he had helped himself to war funds. He resigned under pressure from President Grant.

IRS agents are often viewed with disdain by people subjected to audits, especially in the horse industry because agents frequently do not understand the intricacies of breeding, racing or showing.

CDeary KPCasey Deary • Photo by Kelsey PecsekNational Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Professional Casey Deary has earned over a Million Dollars in NRHA competition and is justifiably proud and awed by his accomplishment. Deary, known as a devoted family man, has his own cheerleaders in his wife Nicole Deary and their children Wyatt, Joy, Owen and Olivia. Deary, of Weatherford, Texas, earned his first NRHA paycheck on November 4, 2000, in Katy, Texas, at the Saltgrass Steak House Warmup show aboard Crome Marks (Crome Plated Jac x Marks Lee Ann x Marks Alynx), owned by Maureen Underwood. The young horseman earned $82 – a far cry from his most recent paycheck of $161,466 for winning the NRHA Open Futurity Level 4 division riding Shesouttayourleague for owner Curtis Performance Horses LLC! To say Deary had a good November and December is a monumental understatement.
