Fort Langley, British Columbia, Canada-based cutter Travis Rempel kept the glory at home when he topped the Calgary Stampede installment of the event riding This Cats Max.
This Cats Max (WR This Cats Smart x PF Docs Med x Peppys Formula), owned by Doug and Angie Wiens, of Lindell Beach, British Columbia, marked a 225 from draw six out of nine in the Open finals. That score bested the competition by 3 points, securing the Mercuria Open Championship and an $8,167 paycheck.
The 7-year-old homebred gelding passed the $100,000 milestone with this win, according to Equi-Stat records. Since his 3-year-old season in 2012, This Cats Max has made a name for himself in Canada, winning or finishing near the top at the Calgary Stampede, Canadian Cow Horse Supreme and several other limited-age events many times.
The Open Reserve title went to Cats In Ya Dreams and Jason Taylor, of Rancho Murieta, California. The 9-year-old Ian and Billie Buckeridge-bred gelding (High Brow Cat x Dreams Of Oak x Docs Freckles Oak), owned by Carol Ward, marked a 222 and brought home a $6,933 check.
