Congratulations to NRCHA Futurity Non-Pro Limited

Congratulations to NRCHA Futurity Non-Pro Limited Champions Wing Anda Prayer & Hope Mitchell.

Mitchell, who was competing in her first-ever cow horse show, marked a winning composite of 641.5 (214 herd/211 rein/216.5 cow).

Wing Anda Prayer is owned by Mitchell and her husband, John. They raised the mare (Meteles Cat x Wings Ofa Lena x Quejanisalena) after buying her as an embryo from her breeder, Brazilian Marcus Guimaraes.

The world of cutting lost a great stallion this week when Smart Mate was laid to rest.

The 30-year-old son of Smart Little Lena and out of Freckles Playmate (by Freckles Playboy) has made an impact on the breed as a sire and as a broodmare sire. He's fathered the earners of more than $8 million, and his daughters have foaled the winners of nearly that much.

He was owned for the last two and a half decades of his life by Pat and Connie Fitzgerald, of Paoli, Oklahoma.

The late CD Olena won the NCHA Futurity Open Champ

The late CD Olena won the NCHA Futurity Open Championship as a 3-year-old, but his influence as a sire extends well beyond the cutting discipline.

The 1991 son of Doc Olena and out of CD Chica San Badger (by Peppy San Badger) has sired the earners of more than $17.6 million. Of that, more than a million of that was earned by his progeny in reined cow horse competition.

His leading reined cow horse earners were Hes Shinettes CD ($190,739), CD Diamond ($153,320) and CD Survivor ($152,723). CD Olena's daughters also foaled cow horse earners of nearly $500,000.

Look through the draw list of this year's NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, and you'll see how his legacy in the discipline is still feld today through breeding stallions like CD Diamond -- an NRCHA Futurity Open Champion who sired another NRCHA Futurity Open Champion, SJR Diamond Mist -- as well as one of the show's all-time leading sires, CD Lights.

We crunched the numbers to find the all-time leading sire in the history of the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity and -- surprise, surprise -- it was the great Shining Spark.

The legendary palomino son of Genuine Doc who was bred by Carol Rose leads all stallions with more than $1.4 million in earnings at that one show alone, according to Equi-Stat.

He's not the only legend on the list. It's a line-up featuring some of the most talented and versatile sires in in the industry.

An experienced horsewoman will soon take the reins

An experienced horsewoman will soon take the reins of the National Reined Cow Horse Association.

Anna Morrison, who currently works for the AQHA and Quarter Horse Foundation, was named as the new executive director of NRCHA.

“I’m incredibly honored to have been selected for this role, joining a talented and dedicated team that has worked diligently to keep the NRCHA on track through an unprecedented year,” she said.

True Believers is a son of Dont Stopp Believen and out of the mare One Red Mist (by One Time Pepto). He was bred by the Rapps.

Last year, Lance Johnston guided Here Comes The Boon to an amazing win in the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity.

With a finals fence run of 226, they won the Open and Intermediate titles to the delight of the crowd -- and Johnston also became an NRCHA Million Dollar Rider.

This year's NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, Presented by Metallic Cat, starts this Saturday, Oct. 10. Johnston is back for another crack at the big prize, as are many of the best cow horse riders in the country.
