Two weeks ago: May 6, 2017, the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby took place in Louisville, Kentucky. The field had 20 horses in it, the 20 best 3-year-old Thoroughbred racehorses in the world. Four of the 20 horses, or 20 percent of the field, had direct ties to bloodlines my family purchased firsthand, including the winner, Always Dreaming!

SDP 2017Stallions

This edition of Industry Insider with SDP will be a little different then the ones we have submitted in the past, so bear with me. My name is Shella Langford and I am the marketing director at SDP Buffalo Ranch. Shane has given me the honor of submitting this blog, and I am excited to do it.

I just finished reading a book titled The Time Keeper by Mitch Albom.

It is National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Super Stakes time here in Fort Worth, Texas! The Super Stakes is the second leg of the NCHA Triple Crown, the second largest cutting horse competition behind the NCHA Futurity and one of the biggest equine events in the world. I’ve attended every Super Stakes since 2005, so you could call me a 12-year veteran.

Many years ago, I read an article stating that 70 percent of the foals born each year are born in March, April and May. In the information age in which we live, it’s a cardinal sin not to fact check, but I reckon that statistic is pretty darn close, regardless. So being that we just hit first of March, the vast majority of us are getting excited for some new arrivals!

I have been fortunate in my life to have many great teachers. For the most part, I have been a student of observation. I really can’t think of any principles or concepts learned from someone teaching me directly, but I give credit to many people that I have learned from. Chief among that group are my parents. Being raised by entrepreneurs, I have learned a great deal with respect to risk, sacrifice, reward, hard work, ingenuity, character and defeat. I have heard my father say countless times, “People will always rise to the level of their own incompetence.”

Reflection and the Future

Isn’t it just awesome that foaling coincides with the New Year! God truly does love horses; gestation is 11 months and breeding season starts the first week of February. Coincidence? Nope, God is a horseman, for sure!

Gratification can come in many ways. I think for most folks, it is the simple things that bring the most joy. Last week, during the NCHA Futurity, I made a trip over to the Quarter Horse News office to visit with the fine folks at Equi-Stat. I’m a stat junkie; numbers influence every decision I make. When it comes to breeding, I make my mating selections based off performance-based results. I have studied “The Master of Matings,” the great breeder Federico Tesio, and he was self-proclaimed “statistician breeder.” Not to get off course here, as I can when it comes to talking about breeding, but I love stats!

sdpLive Quarter Horse News was live on Facebook with Shane Plummer of SDP Buffalo Ranch. You can see the whole exclusive conversation here!

“Opinions are like armpits, everyone has one and most of them stink!”

Sale season is upon us! There is so much to choose from and there are so many decisions to make, it can seem a little overwhelming. So I thought I’d share some thoughts on this topic, as we will be in the thick of it soon!

Sannman is a rare gem! By the great Metallic Cat and out of the legendary The Smart Look, he should be on everyone’s list of stallions! His dam is No. 3 all-time cutting broodmare the only mare to produce three different Open Triple Crown event champions (NCHA Futurity, Super Stakes & Derby), that are by three different sires!

I’ve been contacted a lot over the past week since the last issue of the Quarter Horse News (QHN) Insider came out with the article written by Stacy Pigott titled “Breeding to Win.” Stacy originally wrote that article for the Dec. 15, 2014 issue of QHN. In it, we discussed numerous mating theories put into practice by some legendary horse breeders. Due to the inquires I've received over the past 10 days, I’ll share a little bit more on this topic today.

Whenever I am asked what I do for a living, my wife cringes when I pull out the, “I sell sperm for a living.” For those who don’t know me, my humor can be a bit dry as I tend to just leave that one sit there a bit. It always goes over well at church when meeting someone new…

I traveled 28,000 miles in June on three continents, all related to my horse business of standing stallions. In between traveling abroad and attending the Australian and Brazilian cutting futurities, I attended three days of the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Convention in Grapevine, Texas, as I serve as a director for Region 8. I’ll say that even though the mainstream media and politicians from both sides in this country preach doom and gloom, thus far in 2016, my experiences, especially those in June, have led me to be very optimistic about the future.

Oxford defines outlier as: "a person or thing situated away or detached from the main body or system." In the world of cow horses, there has been three dominant sire lines over the past 10 years – High Brow Cat, Dual Rey and Peptoboonsmal. For the past two breeding seasons, we have been honored to stand one of the great sires of the industry, and by the numbers, he is a true outlier at stud!
