Last month, I had the pleasure of attending the 2013 AQHA Convention in Houston, Texas. This isn’t the first year I’ve been to the convention, but it is the first year I was able to stay for its entirety – from the opening comments to the closing remarks, and everything in between.

I’ve owned horses for the better part of 30 years and more than once I’ve had to answer the question, “Why? Why do you own horses?” Many people mistakenly think it’s fame, money, power or prestige that prompts us to become horse owners. For me, the answer was far easier. It’s about the horse. I love the horse.
One theory in sport psychology suggests that athletes may differ in their predisposed goal orientation. Essentially, the aim of setting goals is to achieve “something,” but how do we define achievement? Whether we succeed or fail depends on our perception of whether we have reached our personal goals or not. Gary Rosenbach picked up a National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Super Stakes Derby Amateur Championship aboard Scooters Daisy Dukes (Dual Smart Rey x Scooters Playmate x Freckles Playboy) Monday, April 8, in Fort Worth, Texas. The duo marked a 220 to win the class and $5,138 in prize money. Scooters Daisy Dukes, a 2009 mare, is owned by Rosenbach’s Rose Valley Ranch, Weatherford, Texas, and bred by Jeff Barnes, Wilton, Calif.
The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Board of Directors met on April 8 to discuss the 2013 NRHA Cowtown Classic and recent information brought to their attention regarding changes made to Texas Event Trust Fund policies. In light of these changes, the Board of Directors decided to cancel the 2013 event.
