Flarida Wins Florida Reining Classic Derby

FlaridaShawn FlaridaThe Florida Classic, hosted by the Florida Reining Horse Association (FRHA), was held Feb. 21-28 at the Bob Thomas Equestrian Center at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa, Florida. In addition to the high-dollar Derby Open and Non-Pro classes,the FRHA offered four Rookie and Green Reiner slates. There was something for everyone and prizes galore.

Bamacat stole the show when he won the Open finals during the second leg of the Mercuria/National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) World Series of Cutting, which was held Feb. 27-28 during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in Houston, Texas.

In early February, the Quarter Horse News staff welcomed Kristin Burlingame as a new associate editor, and in the next few weeks, we hope to fill the remaining opening on our staff with another new face. What this means is that over the past few months, I’ve read a lot of résumés and interviewed plenty of worthy candidates. While the talent coming out of our nation’s colleges and universities is inspiring, talking to so many budding young journalists has the unfortunate side effect of making me feel old. Very old.

ARA Cancels Papers Of Two Half-Arabian Cutting Horses

Following an investigation by the Arabian Horse Association's (AHA) Registry Services Department under the leadership of Debbie Fuentes, AHA's Registrar, the Half-Arabian Registration Papers for Johnny Nitro and Quintessa were cancelled after determining the horses had no Arabian parent as indicated in their registration applications and subsequent Certificates of Registration. Susan and Terry Hatfield had registered the two horses in December of 2009. As a result of the investigation, a Notice of Charges for violating AHA rules, Chapter 10, Section 102, was issued to the Hatfields.
