Horse Therapy Legislation Introduced In The House

Representatives Michael Burgess (R-CA) and Tom Cotton (R-AR) have introduced The Rehabilitative Therapy Parity for Military Beneficiaries Act of 2013 (H.R. 1705). This legislation would amend federal law to provide that military families and wounded veterans are entitled to be reimbursed for therapies, including “therapies provided on a horse” that are medically authorized. A pioneering study at the University of Kentucky suggests humans have a lot to learn from horses. Horses can help people develop empathy and enhance social and leadership skills, according to a recently-completed study of equine-assisted learning among 21 nurses at UK Chandler Hospital.
