Winning the World: 1974-1978

NRHA06 Three-NRHA-bronzes PF

The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) has annually recognized the best of the best as they set the standard for excellence in the reining arena by naming World Champions. Today’s champions and top 10 riders literally come from all over the world, but it didn’t start out that way. The World Championship program started as a truly local competition involving only a handful of riders. And for the most part, they didn’t have to travel too far for the scant number of approved reinings offered. The NRHA named its first Open and Non-Pro World Champions in 1974.

Before the stallion’s untimely death following colic surgery at the age of 6, he was the NCHA’s first Triple Crown Champion, winning the 1983 NCHA Futurity Open, 1984 NCHA Super Stakes Open and 1984 NCHA Summer Spectacular Derby Open. He won a $263,438 Futurity paycheck, then added $250,319 at the Super Stakes and $84,776 at the Summer Spectacular. Docs Okie Quixote’s lifetime earnings totaled $637,707. His short stallion career resulted in 43 money-earning offspring who amassed $609,049 for average earnings of $14,164. • Photo by Fred Miller

Nu Circle Of Light carried reined cow horse trainer Ted Robinson to his seventh National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Championship nearly 11 years ago, in October 2005. The win was especially meaningful to Robinson because he had won his first Futurity Championship, in 1987, on the stallion’s grandsire, Nu Cash. Nu Circle Of Light’s dam, Katie Starlight, also provided many special memories for Robinson with the mare having carried Robinson to two World’s Greatest Horseman championships, in 1999 and 2001.

When it comes to public horse auctions, the question, “How much is that horse worth?” is often answered with, “It’s worth as much as a buyer is willing to pay for it on that day.” Sometimes, there is a large gap between what a buyer is willing to pay and what a seller is willing to accept, and the horse is repurchased, or passed out. The seller takes the horse home to regroup and develop a new plan, which might include another sale in the future.

The National Western Stock Show announced it will host the second annual Invitational Ranch Rodeo in 2017 following a successful and entertaining inaugural event during opening weekend of the 2016 show. Details are still to come, but plan to see some of the top ranch hands and horses compete in January. Ranch rodeos, based on traditional ranching activities, feature teams of cowboys/cowgirls from working ranches competing against other ranches.
