A Table for the Ages

Working for Quarter Horse News has given me the opportunity to drool over many beautiful championship belt buckles. As a hopeful future reiner, one of the things I most look forward to is winning a “real” buckle myself. Sure, I received a buckle in high school for selling the second-highest amount of ads for my FFA chapter, and my dad bought me a buckle that has a horse on it when I was in middle school. But to actually receive a buckle for accomplishing something with my horse? In a way, that feels like a pipe dream.

The Classic/Challenge Non-Pro brought 23 horse and rider combinations to the show pen, and only one came out with the Championship.

Showing in the Australian Non-Pro Futurity

I traveled 28,000 miles in June on three continents, all related to my horse business of standing stallions. In between traveling abroad and attending the Australian and Brazilian cutting futurities, I attended three days of the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Convention in Grapevine, Texas, as I serve as a director for Region 8. I’ll say that even though the mainstream media and politicians from both sides in this country preach doom and gloom, thus far in 2016, my experiences, especially those in June, have led me to be very optimistic about the future.

Reymanator (Dual Rey x Savannah Hickory x Doc’s Hickory) and Zane Davis won the 2011 National Stock Horse Association (NSHA) Derby Open Championship. The 2006 gelding is the NSHA Snaffle Bit Futurity & Derby’s leading open horse with $34,000 in earnings. In 2009, the team won the NSHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open and the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity Open. It was an evening to remember as a small group of cutting horse enthusiasts – 30-75 people – gathered in mid-November 1962 at the Sweetwater Coliseum in Sweetwater, Texas, to watch the finals of the first ever 3-year-old Cutting Futurity.
The list of individuals present read like a Who’s Who of the cutting world. They had showed up to watch 20 finalists compete for an unheard of amount of money back then – $18,364.

In the Know: Forage Height to Promote Growth

Horses graze closer to the ground than cattle, which makes overgrazing in horse pastures a problem. To promote growth, a minimum forage height should always be maintained. That height is dependent on the grass species. For example, in Texas, Bermudagrass and Bahia grass should have a minimum height of 3 to 4 inches.

When Senor Shiney Cat posted a 148 down the fence at the East Coast Reined Cow Horse Classic, it added to a rein work score of 143 and a herd work mark of 142 for a composite score of 433 that won the East Coast Reined Cow Horse Classic Derby Open and Intermediate Open.

As time went by, several big runs were posted, but it was not until about halfway through the draw that the competition really heated up.
