Insights & Opinions: Industry Migration

As this issue (Sept. 15, 2016) was going to press, I received a letter from well-known trainer Bobby Ingersoll. He wanted to address the National Reined Cow Horse Association’s (NRCHA) announcement that its Snaffle Bit Futurity is moving from Reno, Nevada, to Fort Worth, Texas, in 2017.

The decision to change venues is potentially the most controversial issue the cow horse industry has ever faced and certainly the most polarizing in recent years. Horsemen either agree with the move or they don’t, and there are plenty of opinions on either side.

The Evolution of the Cowboy – 1933 Jo Mora

There is a framed poster in the Cowboy Publishing Group office kitchen. This poster has fascinated me from the first moment I saw it. First, it is big! Second, its detail is on a level that can only be described as mind melting, but in a good way. The poster, “Evolution of the Cowboy”, is a second edition of a rodeo poster Uruguayan-born artist Joseph Jacinto “Jo” Mora illustrated for the California Rodeo Salinas in 1933.

Seventeen horses (including ties) took home money in the Tamarack Ranch Futurity Level 4 Open finals at the High Roller Reining Classic on Sept. 15 in Las Vegas. Of those money-earners, four were sale horses in 2014 and all could now be considered relative bargains. Only one of the four horses was a repurchase at $8,000, while the other three sold for prices ranging from $9,000 to $37,000.
