I was penning 600 head of steers once. I needed them to go in a gate they had been in and out 2,010 times that winter. The uprights were tied together at the top with drill pipe. It was a bright day, and that drill pipe cast a shadow across the mouth of the alley. It might as well have been the Palo Duro Canyon. They ain’t going. Fortunately, I had a real cowboy, a geezer, heppin’ us.

NRHA Futurity Open Finalists Determined

LuckieMoonstone SFlaridaLuckie Moonstone and Shawn Flarida topped the NRHA Futurity Level 4 Open composite.The 2016 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship (NAAC) Show offered section 3 of the Open semifinals on Nov. 29. Once the last horse-and-rider combination left the Jim Norick Arena, all of the Open finalists were determined.

The title adds to a long list of accolades for the mare, who has built an Equi-Stat record of $351,125 with Kobie, an Equi Stat Elite $5 Million Rider, and non-pro Paula, an Equi-Stat Elite $2 Million Rider. The success of this mare has truly been a family affair not only for this family of cutters, but for her pedigree family, as well.

The road to the Futurity can be long and arduous, with hopefuls hailing from all over the United States and, indeed, the world. The paths of some horses led them through various sale rings, as one-third of the Level 4 Open finalists are previous sale horses.

Just one month prior to the Oklahoma City victory, Flarida guided the handsome sorrel stallion to the Open Reserve Championship in the All American Quarter Horse Congress Straight Arrow Reining Futurity in Columbus, Ohio.

Mullin’s parents, Dan and Colleen, of Cartwright, Manitoba, Canada, are long-time Canadian Quarter Horse Association members, and Mullin got her start in the equine industry by ranching with them on their Manitoba Quarter Horse operation. Mullin can now usually be found roping and riding across the Canadian prairies.
