Step Outside The Bubble

I didn’t mean to do it. I wasn’t totally prepared, and it probably came out all wrong. I stood up and spoke at a committee meeting during the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Convention in Fort Worth, Texas.

It was the Long Range Planning Committee – the individuals the NCHA counts on to “make recommendations with regard to the direction of NCHA for future growth and development and make recommendations regarding improvements to the structure of the NCHA as set forth in its Constitution and By-laws.”

Summer takes a toll on us all. With temperatures circling the century mark almost anywhere in the U.S., we should all be mindful of how this affects our horses. Most trainers in the Southwest will start working horses about 3 a.m. these days just to avoid the worst of the heat.

Keep Up With The Changes

It seems like we just get used to something then it changes. It can be hard to keep up with the constant change and very distracting to our performance preparation.

Let's take a look at some significant changes that the equestrian industry has experienced over the years:

Colonels Smoking Gun (Gunner) Laid To Rest

GunnerAt McQuay Stables in Tioga, Texas, the focus has long been on exceptional performance - both human and equine. But people close to owners Tim and Colleen McQuay know that underlying all the awards and accolades the couple's real focus has always been the love of the horse.

So, losing any horse would be hard. But saying goodbye to a great one pushed the difficulty to another level when Colonels Smoking Gun, known worldwide simply as "Gunner," lost his battle with laminitis on July 8. The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Hall of Fame inductee and $5 Million Sire was humanely put down after spending the last week at Equine Medical Associates in Pilot Point, Texas, under the constant care of Dr. John McCarroll.
