A husband and father, Hunt left behind a loving family and an industry full of people that are mourning the loss.

Hunt, who lived in and operated his business out of Millsap, Texas, was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer in the fall of 2016. His treatment, which included radiation and chemotherapy, began in November and continued into the new year. He succumbed to his illness in May, which is nationally recognized as Brain Tumor Awareness Month.

Hunt’s first cutting check posted to Equi-Stat in 1988 in the Youth. During the mid-1990s, he began showing in the Open arena and became known for his talent with 2-year-olds. Among his most notable accomplishments are a ninth place in the 2012 National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity John Deere Open and a trip to the Futurity Open semifinals with Boonafide Cowgirl (Peptoboonsmal x Pretty And Wise x Wise Play).

Hunt’s final checks, according to Equi-Stat, were earned in October 2016 at a PK Cutters weekend event. Earlier in the season, he piloted Ultimately Stylish (Stylish Rey x Ultimately Smart x Little Peppys Ultimo) to the NCHA Super Stakes Classic John Deere Open finals, where they marked a 210 to finish eighth.

Immediately after learning of Hunt’s condition in late 2016, his cutting friends jumped into action raising funds for Hunt’s medical bills and his family expenses. A benefit golf tournament, organized by Don Bell, Hunter Meinzer and Josh Drake, was scheduled for June 11 prior to Hunt’s death, and the event will continue as planned. The proceeds will go toward supporting Hunt’s wife, Jenna, and their daughter, Kay.
