Escaping the Heat

July18 CraigsSpinThree-year-old palomino stud colt Palefacegunslinger (Pale Face Dunnit x Lost In Tinseltown), owned by Tim Anderson

Hi Everyone!

We have had a busy last month! We had a great show at the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby, making the finals on all three of my entries, and my non-pros all made their finals, as well. I am very proud of them and my horses.

Building Blocks

Germany CS

May has been a month of clinics and horse shows. I just returned from two weeks in Germany and Italy, where I presented several clinics. I am so appreciative of the riders who trust me to help them better their horsemanship and training skills. I am always honored that I have the opportunity to work with them. It is fun to meet new friends and be able to share my knowledge. My wife, Ginger, and I had a great time and came home with many fantastic memories.

Feed and Supplements

CS 01252017

Hi all,

I want to spend sometime talking about my feed and supplement program. We have several companies we have worked with for many years that I am confident have played a crucial part in my horses' good health and well-being. Working together with Purina feed and Omega Alpha supplements, I keep my horses looking and feeling the best they can.

The Breeding Game

Show season is underway and I am so pleased with my group of 4-year-olds. I showed them for the first time at the Cactus Reining Classic and they all did well, earning good checks in their divisions.

Happy New Year!

January has been a month of organizing and preparing for the New Year. We take this time to get ready by organizing our paper books, renewing all of our memberships and making sure all of our paperwork is in order.

Quality Time of Year

Dec15 16 QualityTimeofYear

Hi All!

What a year it has been! We had an incredible NRHA Futurity with all three of my Pale Face Dunnit colts making the top 10, along with my wife's horse winning almost $50,000 in the Non-Pro. Many more of his foals showed well and had combined earnings of almost $188,000 at the Futurity!! This was a huge accomplishment as we bred, raised and trained all of the ones we showed. I want to take this opportunity to thank my family, staff and customers for all of your support. Without you, I would not be where I am.

Return From Congress

10 19 16 congress

Hi All!

I just returned home from the All American Quarter Horse Congress, where my wife, Ginger, and I showed four futurity horses by Pale Face Dunnit that we bred and raised. Between the four of them, they brought home more than $36,000 in prize money. I am very proud of these horses and look forward to their futures in the show ring!

Summer is over, the kids are back in school and we are hitting the road for the futurities. Our next stop is Las Vegas for the High Roller Reining Classic, where we will show both our 3-year-olds and our derby horses.

A Time Like This

Schmersal 07 28 16

Hi All! We are at our first futurity of the year, the Rocky Mountain Reining Horse Association Summer Slide in Denver. I brought four futurity horses, all by Pale Face Dunnit and out of mares that we have shown and retired.

It's Derby Time!

We are at the National Reining Horse Association Derby in Oklahoma City! So far the weather has been pretty good. We are all set up and ready to show. I only brought one horse to show in the Derby as we had the opportunity to sell several of my others.

CS EquiselWith the National Reining Horse Association Derby right ahead of us and the Futurities on the heels of that, I am taking extra precautions with my horses’ health. With the heat of the summer, I am always concerned about the stress and pressure on my horses.

Hi All!

I just returned home from the National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) in Katy, Texas. It was an exciting show, starting off with torrential rains and flooding in Houston.

This is one of my favorite times of the year. Our 2 year olds have had at least 30 days riding and we finally get to see them under saddle after 3 years of waiting time. A lot of people ask me why I start my 2 year olds early in Dec or Jan. The reason I do this is so they get 5 days a week of consistent training.

Happy New Year Everyone!

January is the month for resolutions. Mine usually starts the same, lose some weight and continue to be the best trainer I can be. As we roll through January the NRHA is having a judges school which I will be teaching and a membership meeting in Oklahoma City that is full of hot topics.

CashingBlackChex FuturityCashing Black Chex and Craig Schmersal took third at the 2015 NRHA Futurity!I am happy to report we had a great time at the Futurity this year. With this being NRHA’s 50th Anniversary, there was a great program and video recognizing all the history-makers in the NRHA.

'Go Pro' With Craig Schmersal

The final showdown is just around the corner. This is the time when the pressure seems the greatest. I know my stress level goes up because of the expectations I have on myself and that my customers expect from me.

The Life of a Trainer’s Wife

By Ginger Schmersal

Quarter Horse News asked me to be a guest blogger for Craig this month — I am flattered. The question was: what's it like to be a trainer’s wife this time of year? Well, I can tell you the first word that comes to mind is chaotic.

DunnitiniDunnitini, a Pale Face Dunnit filly that I have for sale now

I hate to see a 2-year-old that has been pushed too hard in their training. I am able to see ability without having to see it running plus-one everything. When I see young horses looking like they have been pushed too hard, it is a red flag for me. I like my prospects to be healthy and happy, both physically and mentally. Here is a little video of one of my Pale Face Dunnit fillies that I have for sale now. I feel like this is what a 2-year-old should look like at this point in their training.

Selecting a Sale Horse

PaleFaceDunnitxShinetiniSchmersal Ranch is offering this 2-year-old filly, who is a good example of what Craig Schmersal looks for in a sale horse – good conformation, fashionable bloodlines (Pale Face Dunnit x Shinetini) and a great mind.Sale season is right around the corner. We are fitting quite a few yearlings and sending several 2-year-olds to the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA)/Markel Insurance Futurity Prospect Sale. When the topic of horse sales comes up, people always ask me what I am looking for in a prospect when I go to buy one for a customer.
