Cira Baeck WhizasunnysailorBBCira Baeck aboard IRHA/NRHA Derby Level 4 Open Champion WhizasunnysailorBB"I can't believe I actually won the Derby in Italy!" were the first words National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) professional and past NRHA Non-Pro World Champion Cira Baeck said after posting the top score, a 224.5 in the Italian Reining Horse Association (IRHA)/NRHA Derby Level 4  Open.  Making the win even sweeter was the fact that Baeck was riding Whizasunnysailor BB (Topsail Whiz x Walla Walla Sunshine x Shining Spark), owned by Ruediger Diedenhofen and bred by Eifel Gold Ranch Baeck of Beglium.

Photo by WaltenberryThe highlight of the Carolina Classic show, held at the Senator Bob Martin Agriculture Center, May 16-19, Williamston, N.C., was definitely the Carolina Classic Derby held in conjunction with the Atlantic Breeders Incentive (ABI) Derby. Each Derby had three Open divisions. Martina Morell, riding Dun Gotta Prize (Dun It Gotta Gun x Senorita Enterprise x Be Aech Enterprise) for Leigh Garber, Cazenovia, N.Y., scored a 225.5 to win all six open divisions offered.

Sly Playgirl Wins BI Classic/Challenge Open

LuisDeArmasSlyPlaygirlOwner Luis DeArmas and Sly PlaygirlSly Playgirl needed to win Tuesday’s Classic/Challenge Open finals with trainer Jaime Snider to become the Breeder’s Invitational All-Time Top Earning Horse and that’s what she did. A first-set 221 by the 6-year-old mare (That Sly Cat x Taquitas Playgirl x Freckles Playboy) and Snider, 33, Lipan, Texas, held up for a victory worth $22,826.

Four Sixes Ranch/NCHA Western Nationals Wrap-Up

DavidBooth The Four Sixes Ranch/National Cutting Horse Association Western Nationals finished the last round of finals May 8 with the Non-Pro and $15,000 Novice/Non-Pro.

As the fourth to go in the second of two herds of the Non-Pro finals, David Booth was bound to do well aboard Cat N Charm. In the first go, the duo marked a 217.5 to tie for third. In the Non-Pro finals, they made a solid run to mark a 216.5. Seven horses later, they became the Non-Pro Champions.

"It's amazing to beat some of the guys who made me want to do this in the first place," said Vogel, who established his own cow horse training operation in late 2007.
