merialscreenshotEducational videos are available at rethinkdeworming.comWhen it comes to deworming horses, the message has been confusing. After all, for more than four decades, horse owners heard the same one: rotate. But now, rotating is old news. What’s the new message? Be strategic about your deworming.

What I've Learned From Horses

Written by Justin High, DVM on .

Horses are great animals for many reasons, but if you think about it, they are excellent teaching tools for people. Now I have as much appreciation for horses as anyone, but I am convinced they are not the smartest animals on the planet. They do, however, have great memories. This is one of the main reasons they are such teachable/trainable animals.

Tunnel Vision

Written by Justin High, DVM on .

Lane LivingstonLane LivingstonAs a veterinarian, I really have to work so I don't develop tunnel vision when it comes to the horses I get to work with. My examinations are not that different from any other vet.  They revolve around whatever problem the horse is presented for – lameness, colic, a wound, eye injury, you name it. The owner or hauler brings them in, or I take a look at them wherever they may be. Haltered and on the end of a lead rope, we go through the formalities of an exam.

Multiple Limb Lameness

Have you ever seen a horse so lame you just don't know where to start trying to figure it out? Well, it seems like here lately I have had more than my share of them. Hopefully, this has not happened to one of your horses, personally, but I bet you have a friend that has. Since it is the curse of any animal owned by a veterinarian, I will exclude myself from the conversation, and stay with client horses.

Horse Breeding Season Is Here!

Written by Dr. Justin High, DVM on .

In Texas, May marks the high point for breeding season, and I hope yours has gone well so far. Equine reproduction is one of the aspects of veterinary medicine where technology has played a major role in helping Mother Nature along, but even so, there can still be some ups and downs when getting mares in foal. If you are in the predicament of being more than halfway through the season with nothing more to show than an empty uterus and a stack of bills, this may be of some use.
