The Ike Derby and Classic kicked off on Jan. 27, and the first champions were crowned during the 5/6-Year-Old Open finals on Jan. 29. Out of a field of 21 horses, Equi-Stat Elite $6 Million Rider Austin Shepard and Twistful Thinking took home top honors.
The National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) announced that it has reached an agreement with Chuck Smith to continue to serve as the association's interim executive director during the remaining term of his presidency and to assume full time executive director duties after the NCHA Convention in June of 2017.

The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) is now offering the opportunity for show secretaries to attend an in-person workshop at the 2017 NRHA Winter Meeting in Fort Worth, Texas.
In a meeting on Jan. 17, the Scottsdale City Council approved three resolutions, which included a 10-year contract between WestWorld and the Arizona Quarter Horse Association (AzQHA), and budgeting allocation information. The contract has an option of a 10-year extension and will help to produce the Arizona Sun Country Quarter Horse Circuit, the Arizona Fall Championship and the Parada del Sol Rodeo.
With added money sponsored by Miles and Becky Elliott, the NCHA and the Atlantic Coast Cutting Horse Association, the Mercuria/National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) World Series of Cutting, held in conjunction with the Augusta Futurity, drew quite a few people to Augusta, Georgia. The Open boasted 34 entries, with 9 making it back to the finals.
