When Carmen Buckingham took Kitty Wilkins to the Reno Non Pro Snaffle Bit Futurity, she knew she’d been working hard on improving the horse’s reining, she didn’t know if it would be enough for the chips to fall her way in Reno though.
At early futurities her herd work was good, but she had some baubles in the rein work.
“We’ve been working really hard to get through that and and I think our homework paid off in the reining here,” Bckingham said. “So I’m extremely happy to get her through the reining at this show. And hopefully we can just continue growing.”
Kitty Wilkins (WR This Cats Smart x Miss Bella Blue x Frettin) came out on top in the herd work with a 217.5.
“I always feel confident with her in the herd work because she’s just really cowy and we practice a lot, so I felt pretty confident on that and she was just spot on,” Buckingham said. “In the reining, we’ve had a few little things we’ve been working on and she she was really good so I was extremely happy about getting through the reining pattern.”
In the rein work, a 216.5 was enough to continue leading the pack. Down the fence, Buckingham and Kitty Wilkins earned themselves a 222 and a 6 point lead in that class. A $20,000 check made all their hard work worthwhile.
“We raised her and she’s just really athletic and she’s she’s been easy. I mean she’s just been pretty darn fun to ride. She’s super athletic. So I just need to be on my game to be able to ride her,” Buckingham said.
When all was said and done the homebred mare held a lead of over 10 points.
