Nick Dowers and Cabanna Boy Secure Open Derby Championship with two class-high scores

Million Dollar Rider and Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion Nick Dowers and Cabanna Boy (WR This Cats Smart x Shining Madonna x Shining Spark) make the gelding’s first National Reined Cow Horse (NRCHA) Kimes Ranch Western Derby Finals, followed by two high class scores and an Open Derby Championship.

The 2019 gelding bred by Wagonhound Land and Livestock LLC and owned by Triple D Ranches LLC added $50,000 to his lifetime earnings in one night. Entering the clean slate finals, Nick Dowers and Cabanna Boy only continued to impress judges and spectators.

With 177 entries and only 27 horses in the finals, Dowers hangs his hat and raises his hands to God for his accomplishments in the show pen. The team scored an impressive 224.5 rein work and the event’s highest cow work score, 226.5.

Dowers attributes Cabanna Boy’s success to EquiStat $17 Million Sire WR This Cats Smart for producing his ideal reined cow horse.

“I remember before I went in thinking I wouldn’t want to be on any other horse but him; If I’m ever going to battle, he’s the horse I want to take,” Dowers said.

Dowers thanks his friends and family for their unwavering support throughout the journey to their championship.

“They believe in you more than you do in yourself; it’s not about wins and losses, it’s about who we can be around and effect while showing our horses; the never-ending support makes it all worthwhile,” he said.

Down to just half a point, the $35,000 reserve championship was seized by Clay Volmer and Metallic Casanova (Metallic Cat x Dark And Sultry x Spots Hot), owned by the Pitzer Ranch & Dack Cattle LLC. Since his futurity debut, the 2018 red roan stallion continues to win the hearts of cow horse fans nationwide. With his gorgeous looks and grit down the fence, Metallic Casanova lives up to his name.
