One Time Pepto: A Once in a Lifetime Horse

One Time Pepto, EquiStat earner of $331,097 and sire of offspring earning more than $21 Million, passed on April 8, 2023.

After his purchase as a yearling, he remained with Matthews Cutting Horses — owned by Sheri and the late Jeffrey Matthews —creating a lifetime of memories for everyone involved in his journey.

One Time Pepto was so much more than just a horse to Jeffrey and I. He truly changed our lives forever,” Sheri Matthews said.

“When Jeffrey purchased One Time Pepto as a yearling in 2002 at the Western Bloodstock NCHA Futurity Sales, never in his wildest dreams could he have imagined what would follow,” Matthews said.

One Time Pepto (Peptoboonsmal x One Time Soon x Smart Little Lena) began his career at the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity. With Matt Gaines in the saddle, the 2001 red roan stallion earned many accolades.

Some of his accomplishments include 2004 NCHA Futurity Open semifinalist, 2005 NCHA Super Stakes Open Champion, 2005 Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association (PCCHA) 4-Year-Old Cutting Stakes Open Reserve Champion, 2005 Bonanza Cutting 4-Year-Old Open Finalist, 2006 Abilene Cutting Spectacular Classic/Challenge Open Champion, 2006 Augusta Futurity Classic/Challenge Open Champion.

“He was also at the heart of our decision to move to Weatherford, Texas in 2009, where we ended up living our best life for nearly 13 more great years,” Matthews said. “Through this horse and the business, we met some of our very best lifetime friends.”

“Matt Gaines trained and showed him to earnings over $331,000 by February of the stallion’s 5-year-old year,” she explained. “It was then that Jeffrey enlisted the expertise of Jeff Oswood to manage the breeding plan and retired One Time sound at the age of 5 to service a full book of mares. Jeff was a very important part of the stud’s success,” Sheri said.

Time for Breeding

As he started his breeding career, One Time Pepto was one of the first resident stallions at Oswood Stallion Station in Weatherford, Texas.

“His first foal crop goes to the NCHA Futurity and produces the Non-Pro champion and the Open champion,” Jeff Oswood said. “That was probably one of the most exciting times for us.”

Four of his offspring made the 2011 NCHA Futurity finals in the Open and Non-Pro.

One Time Royalty stunned the crowd in the NCHA Futurity Open in 2010 to win the Championship. One Rockin Pepto (One Time Pepto x Rockin Playgirl x Freckles Playboy) earned the 2010 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro Championship with Austin Blake aboard.

In the reined cow horse, One Time Rey Jay (One Time Pepto x Hickorys Red Rey x Docs Hickory) took home the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Snaffle Bit Futurity Reserve Championship with Jake Telford aboard in 2011.

Since then, his first foal crop has amassed earnings of more than $3 million according to EquiStat.

“He was a real asset to Oswood Stallion Station and the whole journey with the horse was a lot of fun,” Oswood said, adding, “and the relationship that it created with the Matthews is story in itself.”

As of April 2023, One Time Pepto had 867 offspring in EquiStat with earnings of more than $21 million.

Standouts in Every Arena

His leading earner is One Time Royalty (One Time Pepto x Royal Serena Belle x Shorty Lena) at $447,383. The 2007 bay stallion was not only an NCHA Futurity Open Champion but also was: 2012 Breeders Invitational 5/6-Year-Old Open Champion, 2012 NCHA Summer Spectacular 5/6-Year-Old Open Reserve Champion, 2012 PCCHA Futurity Classic Open Champion, and is an NCHA Hall of Fame Inductee.

Second on the list, and One Time Pepto’s top money-earning reined cow horse offspring, is Rubys Radar with $294,431. Rubys Radar (One Time Pepto x Ruby Bagonia x Peppy San Badger) was retired at the age of 12 after he and trainer, Zane Davis earned a long list of accomplishments such as 2014 NRCHA Stallion Stakes Open Reserve Championship; the 2018 Worlds Greatest Horseman Reserve Championship and 2021 The Run For A Million Fence Work Challenge Championship.

One Time Pepto’s cutting horse offspring One Time Choice, Twistful Thinking and Little Miss One Time find themselves ranking third, fourth and fifth on his list of top offspring earners and now have offspring earnings to show for themselves. Twistful Thinking’s foals have earnings of $41,479 while Little Miss One Time has offspring earnings of $77,172. One Time Choice was inducted into the NCHA Hall of Fame in 2014.

Hickory Holly Time (One Time Pepto x Hickorys Holy Cee x Docs Hickory) made his mark at the 2018 NRCHA Worlds Greatest Horseman where he captured the Championship. He also became the 2015 NRCHA Open Hackamore World Champion, 2014 Open Derby Champion, 2015 NRCHA Open Stakes Reserve Champion and the 2013 NRCHA Intermediate Open Futurity Champion.

NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Champion, Time For the Diamond and This One Time, who earned the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Reserve Championship, also made their mark in the cow horse pen.

Peptos Stylin Time recently found himself high in One Time Pepto offspring rankings as well. He stole the hearts of many cow horse fans with his beautiful mane flowing and Abby Philips aboard at the NRCHA Worlds Greatest Horseman finals in 2023.

His offspring have earned $4 million in the cow horse pen as of his passing. They’ve also surpassed $16 million in the cutting pen and average $27,384. It is unique for many cutting sires to have horses that are accepted as graceful enough for the reining pen, but even in reining One Time Pepto has offspring earnings of $55,998.

Greatly missed

Sheri remembers the horse for much more than his performance and breeding accolades.

“He was the sole reason we crossed paths again over 20 years after one single date in 1979, which resulted in us getting married. Jeffrey even insisted on having a life size cut out image of the horse at our wedding,” she reminisced.
