Scooter Kat punches Justin Wright’s ticket to 2023 Run for a Million

Coming off of an exciting Reserve Championship at The American Performance Horseman, Justin Wright and Scooter Kat scored a big win in the Open Bridle class at the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Stallion Stakes presented by Teton Ridge. They also punched their ticket to the 2023 Run for a Million (TRFM) Cow horse Challenge at the South Point Equestrian Center.

Scooter Kat (Kit Kat Sugar x Scooters Daisy Dukes x Dual Smart Rey) with Wright aboard scored a composite of 449.5 (rein 224/cow 225),  adding another $5,304 to the stallion’s earnings of $438,012, according to EquiStat.

The 2015 sorrel stallion has continued proving his prowess in the show pen since his 2018 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Reserve Championship. In the past 12 months, Wright rode Scooter Kat to Open Bridle championships at the NRCHA Western Derby, Snaffle Bit Futurity and the National Stock Horse Association World’s Richest Stock Horse for owner Eric Freitas.

The stallion continues to climb the ranks towards EquiStat Lifetime top reined cow horses. Another trip to TRFAM could prove lucrative for the rider and stallion.

A tie for second place between Sprinkld Confetticat (WR This Cats Smart x PPH Especial Nitro x Nitro Dual Doc) ridden by Shane Steffen and Peptos Stylin Time (One Time Pepto x Stylin Jewel x Docs Stylish Oak) ridden by Abbie Phillips also qualified those two riders for TRFM. Phillips and Peptos Stylin Time recently scored big when they made the NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman finals in February.

Other TRFAM qualifiers from the Stallion Stakes include Clayton Edsall and Lance Johnston. Riders qualified for TRFAM do not have to ride the same horse they rode in the qualifier event. Two more cow horse qualifier events will be held this year at the NRCHA DT Horses Western Derby and the NRCHA Hackamore Classic. Each event will garner spots for the top five riders to head to Las Vegas, Nevada this August.
