The return of All Spice, the 2021 NCHA Horse of the Year and the 2020 NCHA Open Futurity Champion to the arena is a welcome sight to start the year. Her 2023 win in The Ike Derby Open Classic in West Monroe, Louisiana, brings into focus the powerful family her dam, Show Biz Kitty, has established.
Show Biz Kitty (High Brow Cat x Show Biz Sandy x Son Ofa Doc) is an unshown mare that has foal earnings of $1,796,718. In addition to All Spice, daughter Kittennish finished 2022 with the Open Reserve Championship at the NCHA Futurity and then kicked off 2023 by winning the 2023 Augusta Futurity Open.
Then we see that the Co-Reserve Champion at The Ike Derby 4-Year-Old Open was Koldshot Kitty, a maternal half-sister to All Spice and Kittennish. The success in recent months is in addition to Show Biz Kitty’s already great list of money-earners:
- Badboonarising, the 2018 NCHA Open Reserve Champion
- Rollz Royce, the 2019 NCHA Summer Spectacular Open Classic Champion
- SS Blacks Lil Kitty, the 2012 Brazos Bash Non-Pro Champion
- Show Biz Kit Kat, the 2015 Kansas Futurity Non-Pro Champion.
These great horses illustrate the power of this family. When we look at six of these seven cutters, we see that they have earned more than $100,000 and with four of them earning more than $300,000, showing why their dam is a very powerful mare.
High Brow Cat (High Brow Hickory x Smart Little Kitty x Smart Little Lena) brings the blood of Doc’s Hickory, Smart Little Lena and Leo San into the pedigree. We see that in both High Brow Hickory (Doc’s Hickory x Grulla San x Leo San Hank) and Smart Little Kitty (Smart Little Lena x Doc’s Kitty x Doc Bar). Then, we add Leo San Hank being sired by Leo San to his pedigree.
These bloodlines through High Brow Cat are so widespread in the industry today because he is the #1 EquiStat all-time leading stallion with more than $90 million. He’s also the #2 EquiStat all-time leading broodmare sire with more than $62 million in earnings foaled out of his daughters. When we look at the top 15 performers from his list of winners as a broodmare sire, we see that All Spice, Badboonarising, Rollz Royce and Kittennish make this list for their accomplishments and earnings.
A Twist on the Magic Cross
The dam’s side of the pedigree of Show Biz Kitty gives us a new twist on a well-established Magic Cross — the Doc Bar on King P-234 line mares. Doc Bar made his first significant appearance as a cutting horse sire with a mare named Fizzabar who is in the NCHA Hall of Fame. Fizzabar (Doc Bar x Teresa Tivio x Poco Tivio) was the first example of this Magic Cross as Poco Tivio is sired by Poco Bueno by King P-234. Fizzabar was a full sister to such noted horses as Boon Bar, Doc’s Remedy and Doc’s Haida.
We often see Boon Bar and his blood mostly shows up through his daughter Royal Blue Boon, who ranks as EquiStat’s #1 broodmare of all time. Doc’s Remedy is the broodmare sire of the leading sire Dual Pep. Doc’s Haida is the dam of leading sire Haidas Little Pep. Some others sired by Doc Bar and out of Poco Tivio mares include Doc’s Oak, Doc’s Lynx and Doc’s Prescription to name a few. We see this Magic Cross throughout the sire record for Doc Bar including the full brothers Doc O’Lena and Dry Doc out of Poco Lena by Poco Bueno.
Doc’s Jack Sprat an EquiStat $3 Million Sire who follows the pattern set between Doc Bar and the King line of mares, but adds a twist to the Magic Cross. He is out of the mare Pura Fina, who is a great-granddaughter of Poco Bueno — she’s by Puro Tivio a stallion sired Poco Tivio, who is himself a son of Poco Bueno (by King P-234). The dam of Puro Tivio is Red Jane C, a full sister to Poco Bueno. The dam of Pura Tivio’s sire, Pura Fina, is Handy Annie by King P-234. This gives Pura Fina a linebreeding pattern of 4 x 3 x 2 to King P-234 —and the twist we are talking about is the King P-234 linebreeding in this cross on the dam side of the pedigree.
Show Biz Sandy (Son Ofa Doc x Show Biz Annie x Parson Hank) the dam of Show Bizz Kitty, and brings her own credentials to the pedigree. She was the 1993 NCHA Open World Champion, earning $91,889. Overall, Show Biz Sandy is the dam of horses that have earned $390,227, including Show Biz Billy ($155,120) and Show Biz Pep ($146,169). She also brings a Doc Bar/King P-234 form of this Magic Cross into the pedigree.
The link Show Biz Sandy has to the Doc Bar/King P-234 begins with 1982 AQHA Reserve World Champion Senior Cutting Horse Son Ofa Doc . He is the sire of horses that have earnings of more than $5.4 million recorded in EquiStat, including NCHA Open World Champion Bob Acre Doc. The sire of Son Ofa Doc is Doc Bar, and his dam is Jazzy Socks — a mare by Royal King (by King P-234).
Show Biz Annie is an unshown mare who is the dam of money earners of $92,672, with her leading money winner being Show Biz Sandy. Parson Hank is her sire, and he is a son of Joe Hank — a stallion by Hank H (by King P-234)— and out of Queen H —a daughter of the stallion Dan (by Weatherford Joe Bailey). The dam of Parson Hank is Bay Reba (by Leo), and she is out of Duchess H a daughter of King P-234 who is out of Queen H — making her a full sister to Hank H. This gives Parson Hank a breeding pattern of 2 x 3 to King P-234. This gives Show Biz Sandy a breeding pattern of 4 x 4 x 5 to King P-234.
The dam of Show Biz Annie is Doc’s Chico Girl (by Doc Bar). This gives Show Biz Sandy a breeding pattern of 2 x 3 to Doc Bar. Thus, we have linebreeding to Doc Bar and King P-234 with a Doc Bar on King P-234 coupled with a King P-234 on Doc Bar cross. This gives the cross a sex-balanced pedigree with a male and female source of the blood of Doc Bar and King P-234. We do this in the pedigree to increase the opportunity to get genes that are sex linked that would not be available if we are linebreeding to foals by the common ancestors that are the same sex.
Success With Different Stallions
Another interesting aspect of the produce record for Show Biz Kitty is the different stallions she has been crossed on and been successful with in her career, especially in reference to multiple offspring who have won more than $300,000. It is interesting to see the pedigrees of the different stallions she has been bred to and focus on their pedigrees that features the blood of Doc Bar and King P-234.
All Spice and Badboonarising are sired by Once In A Blu Boon, who is sired by Peptoboonsmal and out of Autumn Boon (by Dual Pep). Peptoboonsmal and Autumn Boon a ¾ brother and sister, so we have inbreeding to these two collateral relatives. The sire of Peptoboonsmal is Peppy San Badger and he is out of Royal Blue Boon (by Boon Bar). Autumn Boon is sired by Dual Pep (by Peppy San Badger) and she is out of Royal Blue Boon. The great mare Royal Blue Boon is sired by Boon Bar (by Doc Bar) and out of Teresa Tivio (by Poco Tivio).
Rollz Royce is sired by Dual Smart Rey who has a breeding pattern of 4 x 3 to Doc O’Lena, who is sired by Doc Bar and out of Poco Lena (by Poco Bueno).
Kittennish is sired by Hottish, who is sired by Spots Hot and he is out of Stylish Play Lena. We see that Hottish has a breeding pattern of 5 x 4 x 4 to Doc O’Lena —again, we see the Doc Bar on King P-234 line mares. Stylish Play Lena is sired by Docs Stylish Oak, a son of Doc’s Oak who is by Doc Bar and out of Susie’s Bay (by Poco Tivio). Her dam is Doc’s Stylish, who is by Doc’s Prescription —a son of Doc Bar is out of Jameen Tivio (by Poco Tivio).
We noted at the beginning how the Doc Bar/King P-234 Magic Cross is common in today’s performance horses and the significance of that cross on the Doc Bar influence. Then we see the blood of High Brow Cat and what he brought to the breeding pen and how prominent his blood is today. Then, we get what we call a twist on the Doc Bar/King P-234 cross with different individuals through the dam of Show Biz Kitty.
This reminds me of what B. F. Phillips, Jr., the breeder of Dash For Cash told me— all we are doing is recycling the genes in our breeding efforts. But this time we are moving the blood of Doc Bar and King P-234 forward in the pedigree with some fresh blood. Or maybe we should say bringing it back around in a little different form giving the pedigree a wider variety of Doc Bar/King P-234 genes into the cross. That’s the twist we are talking about.
