Just Call Me Rich is on the larger size of the cow horse spectrum. Sticking at 15.2 hands, the Call Me Mitch gelding has fluid motion and massive stop according to rider Karnell Perry. His talents came in handy at the Idaho Reined Cow Horse Futurity, where he and Perry bagged the Futurity Non-Pro Championship on Thursday, Nov. 3.
“I get comments all the time warming up or after I show, people cannot believe how big he is,” Perry said. “[At first] I was a little concerned with how big he was but he moves really well.”
Marking a 144.5 in the reining, a 140 in the herd and a 148 down the fence, the pair put together a composite of 432.5, earning both the Futurity and Intermediate Futurity Championships and $3,270.
“Just because of his size we’ve had to work the most in the herd work, just to get him to draw and get that big body through the turns,” Perry said. “In the rein work, he was super good, he’s a huge stopper. He runs his circles real pretty, his transition to small slow [circles] is great.”
It was a sweet victory for Perry, who almost scratched from the show. Hailing from Power, Montana, Perry received snow and mud a week before she was going to make the nine-plus hour drive to Nampa, Idaho.
Bred by the JC Paint Ranch of Wapato, Washington, Just Call Me Rich (out of Roosters Miss Fritz by Gallo Del Cielo) was started by Wade Reaney and finished by Perry with Reaney’s assistance. According to Perry, she usually takes her futurity horses through their age-event careers, but she has already been approached by several people interested on getting Just Call Me Rich into their barns.
Reserve Champion in the IRCHA Futurity Non-Pro was Lori Conrow and Habanera Hot Sauce (Once In A Blu Boon x Lil Red Rider Hood x Flo Rider), who marked a composite of 431 (141 herd/144 rein/146 cow) for $1,795 in earnings.
