Debbie Crafton Rides Hot Streak With Biscuits R Smokin

Debbie Crafton and Biscuits R Smokin may be newly acquainted, but that didn’t keep the duo from earning the National Stock Horse Association (NSHA) Futurity Non-Pro Championship Las Vegas.

With a composite of 647.5, (211.5 herd/ 214 rein/222 cow) Crafton and Biscuits R Smokin or “Biscuit” earned $4,367 in the Aug. 28 finals at the South Point Equestrian Center.

“She handled that first fence turn so well,” said Crafton, who has won more than $441,000 in her career and several championships this year. “That second one we went long, but she went and gathered it up again. We went and got a third open field turn and took right off into the circle. And I’m circling – I’m really running – and she’s circling it so good. And I’m telling her ‘Good girl, Biscuit!’”

Crafton purchased Biscuit from breeder and owner Bobby Lewis in May as a futurity boxing horse for her daughter, Lori Frampton. But after getting the mare home, she realized the 14.2-hand Biscuit may be stingier than Frampton would like.

“I went to riding her and I love that thing. She’s going to be a show horse. This is her first [showing], I hauled her to [the Eastern Derby] and then the prefuturity in Fort Worth to get her exposed, and she hauled so well,” Crafton said.

Biscuit is sired by Hickory Holly Time and out of IC The Biscuits (by Dual R Smokin). According to Crafton, despite being behind in training, Biscuit is stepping up to the challenge.

“The ones that are behind, they either want to be show horses and have enough talent or they just don’t. You put pressure to them, but you’re trying to do it in a really gradual way with them [improving] without blowing them up,” Crafton explained. “I think we’re going to be a really good mix because she’s got a lot of heart and a lot of try.”

Reserve Champion in the NSHA Futurity Non-Pro was Karnell Perry and Just Call Me Rich (Call Me Mitch x Roosters Miss Fritz x Gallo Dol Cielo). Perry and Just Call Me Rich earned a composite of 664 (210 herd/213 rein/ 221 cow), also winning the Futurity Intermedia Non-Pro and amassing $5,509 in earnings.
