NCHA to Host Celebration of Life for Buster Welch

A celebration of life for one of the founders of the sport of cutting will be held during this year’s National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Summer Spectacular.

The NCHA announced it will host the celebration for Buster Welch on Thursday, July 28 in Will Rogers Memorial Auditorium on the grounds of the Will Rogers Memorial Complex in Fort Worth, Texas. It will happen immediately following the Intermediate Non-Pro Derby finals and award ceremony.

Welch, who died June 12 at the age of 94, was one of the most influential people in the sport. A 5-time NCHA Futurity Open Champion, he was among those who pooled together money to create the Futurity and trained some of the top horses in the sport’s history, including Peppy San Badger.

A larger-than-life statute of Welch and Peppy San Badger, known in the industry as “Little Peppy,” stands at one of the entrances of the Will Rogers Memorial Center Complex grounds.

Officials say a link for a livestream of the event will be posted on the NCHA website, nchacutting.com, as well as the NCHA social media. It also will be sent out to NCHA text subscribers for the Summer Spectacular.
