Quarter Horse News Honored for Excellence in Journalism

Quarter Horse News (QHN) was recently recognized for journalistic excellence with three first-place finishes in the American Horse Publications (AHP) Equine Media Awards contest.

The Fort Worth, Texas-based media brand, which publishes quarterhorsenews.com and also produces two annual print editions, won three first-place Equine Media Awards and an honorable mention.  The awards were announced Saturday, May 14, at the AHP’s annual conference in Lexington, Kentucky.

Justin High, DVM, won first place in Personal Column Single Article for “Together & Better For It,” which appeared in the 2021 QHN Spring Edition, and QHN Editor Molly Montag won first place in Breaking-News or Investigative Reporting Single Article for “Oklahoma Cow Horse Owner Found Dead, 2 Remain Missing,” which was published at quarterhorsenews.com.

A longtime Quarter Horse News columnist, High is immersed in the Western performance horse world through his practice — Reata Equine Hospital in Weatherford, Texas.

His winning column explored how equine professionals can make a difference in a horse’s life when they work together, as evidenced by a miraculous turnaround on a donkey’s severely clubbed feet. Click here to read “Together & Better For It.”

“Dr. High is both a talented writer and a devoted veterinarian,” Montag said. “Our readers have been fortunate to enjoy Dr. High’s insight through his ‘Health Matters’ columns for many years, and we at Quarter Horse News are thrilled that his work in the Spring Edition received well-deserved recognition.”

In addition, quarterhorsenews.com won top honors in the Publishing Media Equine-Related Website category, and freelancer Betsy Lynch earned an honorable mention in Self-Supported Publication Feature Single Article for “Shining Spark: How Sweet He Is.”

Like High’s winning column, Lynch’s story appeared in the 2021 QHN Spring Edition.  Published in April, the annual Spring Edition is a print issue featuring comprehensive industry statistics powered by EquiStat, in-depth features, and training and horse care insights for the Western performance horse industry. It is the companion product to the QHN Stallion Register, which is published each fall and is the leading stallion resource guide for Western performance mare owners.

“I’m proud to see the quality journalism we feature at Quarter Horse News recognized at the AHP Equine Media Awards this year,” said QHN Editorial Director Kelsey Pecsek Hruska. “QHN has undergone many changes in recent years, and these awards further prove that the brand’s direction is on track to bring readers the news they need to be successful in the Western performance horse industry.”
