Buster Welch Ranches Plans Complete Dispersal

The upcoming Triangle Spring Sale will include a complete dispersal of the last remaining horses bred and raised by legendary horseman and rancher, Buster Welch.

The event is scheduled for April 29-30 at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City and will begin Friday with a sale preview and continue throughout the day Saturday, featuring the Welch Dispersal.

Sale officials say all of the Welch dispersal horses will feature the bloodlines of Peppy San Badger (Mr San Peppy x Sugar Badger by Grey Badger III), known as “Little Peppy,” who carried Welch to the 1977 NCHA Futurity Championship and later became an all-time Leading Sire. The covering sire for the broodmares selling is NCHA Futurity Open Champion Metallic Rey Mink.

The horses will be consigned by Welch’s granddaughter Amy Welch King and her husband, trainer Josh King, of Baird, Texas. The group of horses are the last in a line of stock Welch cultivated from his time as trainer and breeding consultant for King Ranch and as a West Texas horse and cattle rancher.

Welch, who will be 94 in May, holds the record for the most NCHA World Champion Futurity titles with five wins, starting with the first NCHA Futurity in 1962, and including 1963, 1966, 1971 and 1977. He also won four NCHA World Championship titles:  1954, 1956, 1974 and 1976. He also is part of the NCHA Hall of Fame and American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame.

Deadline for Spring Sale entries is March 16. For more details, visit www.trianglehorsesales.net.
