The Beginning of a New Era for Woody Be Tuff

Sponsored by Solo Select Horses LLC

When the gavel dropped on Hip No. 5003 at the Center Ranch Dispersal Sale, which kicked off the Western Bloodstock NCHA Futurity Sales on Dec. 9, the number on the board showed a whopping $1,300,000 for the handsome Woody Be Tuff.

The 2001 sorrel stallion by Nitas Wood and out of Tuffs Junie (by Tuff Lena) was purchased by Solo Select Horses LLC, in partnership with Kaleb Terlip.

“We have searched for another stallion for years – always looking for that outcross with size and consistency as a sire,” said Melanie Smith, owner of Solo Select Horses LLC, located in Whitesboro, TX.  “I’ve known this horse and his entire family from my time with Crumpler Brothers. He has always been a great horse and is truly one of a kind. He has successfully sired more than $7,100,000 in earners – in multiple disciplines!

“We have added Ruby Buckle and Riata Buckle to his list of incentives  – with more to come!” Smith continued. “Woody will stand at Lazy E Ranch for the 2022 breeding season. He will have a limited fresh semen book, so we recommend returning your contracts in a timely manner. International contracts will be available worldwide – Europe, Australia, and Brazil. We are looking forward to promoting Woody to the fullest and can’t wait to see what he continues to sire!”

Woody Be Tuff is an NCHA lifetime money-earner of $351,063 and a National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Open and Non-Pro Futurities semifinalist. He is the No. 2 All-Time Leading Sire of Ranch Horse Money-Earners, the No. 5 Leading Sire of Reined Cow Horse Money-Earners, and is a 2021 Top 12 Leading Sire of Cutting Money-Earners.

An EquiStat Elite $7 Million Sire with money-earners across multiple disciplines, Woody has many top-performing offspring, such as multiple limited-age event cutting champion CR Tuff Lucy ($382,088) and 2012 NCHA Futurity Open Co-Champion CR Tuff Hearted Cat ($276,864). Wood She B Magic and Austin Shepherd marked a notable first-round high of 222 in the 2021 NCHA Futurity Open.

In addition to Zak 34, Woody’s top-money earning cow horses include CR Tuffles N Lace ($132,765, out of Calie Del Rey x Dual Rey) and CR Tuff Guns N Roses ($72,705, out of Gypsy Rose Rey x Dual Rey). They’re among more than $1 million in winnings by Woody Be Tuff progeny in reined cow horse. Zak 34 won the 2021 National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Championship with Justin Wright at the reins. In addition, Woody also had three Open finalists at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity.
