Talking About Bling’s victory with trainer Kenny Platt in the Brazos Bash 3-Year-Old Open continued a winning tradition that began with the horse’s mother.
The sorrel gelding is out of Play Bling, a mare Platt rode to many victories during her aged event and weekend careers. In 2009, they finished fifth in the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) $3,000 Novice World Standings.
Play Bling won more than $56,030 – mostly with Platt or co-owner Hank True in the saddle.
Now, owners Hank and Karen True, of Glenrock, Wyoming, and Platt teamed up to find success with the mare’s son, Talking About Bling.
Platt piloted the gelding by NCHA Open Horse of the Year and EquiStat Elite $1 Million Sire Smooth Talkin Style to a 221 in the finals on Sunday, Oct. 10, to win $24,000 for the Trues, who also were the horse’s breeders.
The Brazos Bash 3-Year-Old Open Reserve Championship went to another offspring of Smooth Talkin Style. Morgan Cromer rode Justin Rockey’s Talkin Awesome (Smooth Talkin Style x Reyonce x Dual Rey), to Reserve with 219.5, which paid $19,000.
Earlier in the year, Talking About Bling recorded his first earnings in the EquiStat database at the Idaho Cutting Horse Association Futurity 3-Year-Old Open, where a 212 earned $1,975. Finishing first at the Brazos Bash pushed the gelding’s lifetime earnings over $26,000.
His dam, Play Bling, now has an EquiStat produce record of more than $58,935.
