Malibu Riptide & Abby Lengel Win Tulsa Reining Classic Futurity

Malibu Riptide rolled into the futurity picture thanks to a win with trainer Abby Lengel in the Tulsa Reining Classic.

The 2018 gelding owned by Tx Horses Unlimited LLC, of Burleson, Texas, marked a 222 to win the Futurity Levels 4 & 3 Open on Saturday, Sept. 3 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Between the two levels, they pocketed $19,374.

The Futurity Level 4 Open Reserve Champions were Old Time Roknroll and Trevor Dare, of Lexington, Oklahoma. Owned by Anita Horn, of Moore, Oklahoma, Old Time Roknroll is a 2018 stallion by EquiStat Elite $2 Million Sire A Sparkling Vintage and out of Roxie Boom (by Boomernic). He was bred by Silver Spurs Equine, LLC, of Scottsdale, Arizona.

Malibu Riptide’s Pedigree

Malibu Riptide is by EquiStat Elite $5 Million Sire Gunnatrashya and out of Malibu Whiz (by Topsail Whiz).

He’s a half brother to four winners: Cashin Malibus Chex ($69,920, by Too Busy Cashin Chex); Shiners Gotta Whiz ($41,120, by Friday Night Shiner); Bingos Malibu Gal ($7,474, by Its Bingo Greyhound) and Lil Joes Whiz Chic ($2,555, by Lil Joe Cash), according to EquiStat.

Like Malibu Riptide, all four of the other money-winning performers out of Malibu Whiz were bred by Robert Santagata, of Campbell Hall, New York.

Blue-Blooded Entries

The early futurities are always a chance to get a look at promising 3-year-olds. And, per usual, the Tulsa Reining Classic Futurity was full of well-bred prospects out of some of the industry’s top mares.

EquiStat Elite $1 Million Dam and NRHA Hall of Famer Dun It For Chex had two foals in the Level 4 – TwoMillionDollarChex (by Spooks Gotta Whiz) and Shiny Silver Chex (by Shiners Voodoo Dr). Ebony Shines, who also is an EquiStat Elite $1 Million Dam and Hall of Famer, had XOChic (by Smart Chic Olena).

NRHA Futurity Open Champions Wimpys Little Chic and Americasnextgunmodel both had foals in the Futurity Level 4 Open at Tulsa: Finals Bound (Gunnatrashya x Wimpys Little Chic) and Americasnextbest (Walla Walla Whiz x Americasnextgunmodel).

Lady Smoke Peppy, the mother of reining Triple Crown Champion A Vintage Smoke, was represented by A Smokin Smart Spook (by Smart Spook).

Ms Dreamy, a Magnum Chic Dream mare who recently competed in The Run For A Million, was represented by Gonna Outbid U. The 2018 colt is by Wimpys High Bid, who also has a The Run For A Million connection because Arno Honstetter rode him to this year’s Freestyle Invitational win.

Several other Level 4 Open entrants were out of stellar show mares or were out of mares who have already produced top-level reining champions.
