In The Blood — Catnaps & Her Foals

Gingersnaps and Equi-Stat $3 Million Rider Morgan Cromer have been the hottest team in cutting. They recently won the Metallic Cat National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Summer Spectacular 4-Year-Old Open scoring a 229, and followed that up with a winning 227 in the Derby Open at the Cascades Futurity & Aged Event. They have additional wins in the Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association (PCCHA) Derby Open, the Breeder’s Invitational Derby Open and the Arbuckle Mountain Futurity Terry Riddle Memorial 4-Year-Old Open. The total earnings for the mare owned by Max and Lori Rhyner’s 7R Ranch now stands at $165,883.

The dam of Gingersnaps is Catnaps (High Brow Cat x Starlights Liz x Grays Starlight), a mare who herself has been on quite a tear this year. This edition of In The Blood focuses the breeding patterns for Catnaps, and her three performers: Gingersnaps; National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) premier event champion Snapdragons; and winning cutter Power Naps.

Bred by R.J. Chambers and the Flying V Ranch in Val Verde, California, Catnaps was first a show horse, and earned $79,917 with highlights including championships in the 2012 UCHA Cutting Futurity 3-year-Old Open and the 2013 UCHA Cutting Futurity 4-Year-Old Open. Her dam Starlights Liz (out of Dox Liz And Lena x Doc O’Lena) earned $31,801 as the 2000 Gold Coast Fall Open Futurity Champion. She is the dam of 2006 South Point Cutting Derby Non-Pro Champion Kittens, a full sister to Catnaps and an earner of $286,515 as well as a producer of more than $809,073.

Dox Liz And Lena is the dam of Pancho Lena ($40,212, by Grays Starlight), a full sister to Starlights Liz who was an NRCHA Supreme Reined Cow Horse.  Dox Liz And Lena is out of Liz Mac (Peppy Hand 2 x Mackay Alice x Black Gold King), and she is the dam of Miss N Mac, the winner of $51,836.

The produce record for Catnaps shows she has seven foals, and her first three performers are Gingersnaps, Snapdragon and Power Naps. Gingersnaps has won several of the top cutting derby events; Snapdragons ($132,226, by Gunnatrashya) was the 2020 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Co-Reserve Champion and the 2021 Tres Osos Cow Horse Derby Champion; and Power Snaps ($12,109, by Once In A Blu Boon) was the winner of the 2020 UCHA Cutting Futurity Intermediate Open. Like their dam and her siblings, these three half siblings were bred by the Flying V Ranch, of Val Verde, California.

Let’s look at the interesting breeding patterns of the three performers out of Catnaps.

Gingersnaps is sired by NCHA Open Horse of the Year Smooth Talkin Style, who is an EquiStat Elite $1 Million Sire and himself was the winner of $305,284. The first crop of Smooth Talkin Style has won more than $1.2 million. Gingersnaps leads this list followed by Baby Talk ($143,505, out of Special Nu Baby x Dual Rey) and Speak Easie ($104,188, out of SDP Miss Caba Rey x Dual Rey).

Smooth Talkin Style is sired by Smooth As A Cat (by High Brow Cat) and Catnaps is a daughter of High Brow Cat. This gives Gingersnaps a breeding pattern of 3 x 2 to this great sire. She also carries a breeding pattern of 5 x 4 to Peppy San Badger. Thus, the emphasis in this pedigree is linebreeding to High Brow Cat concentrating the blood of this great stallion.

Snapdragons is one of the standout cow horses sired by National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity Open Champion Gunnatrashya (Colonels Smoking Gun [Gunner] x Natrasha x Trashadeous), who earned $236,457 and has so far sired the earners of more than $5.2 million -–  not only in reining, but cutting and reined cow horse as well.

His leading reining horses are NRHA Futurity Open Champions Arc Gunnabeabigstar ($323,901, out of Wimpys Little Chic x Wimpys Little Step) and Super Marioo ($295,300, out of HA Chic A Tune x Smart Chic Olena). His leading cutting money winner is Ima Gunna Trasher ($36,381, out of Rubyvous x Smart Little Rondee). The leading reined cow horse money winner is Snapdragons.

The mating of Gunnatrashya and Catnaps was an unexpected happening. When the Catnaps mating to young cutting sire Reyzin The Cash was unavailable they were given a breeding to Gunnatrashya. The pedigree of Gunnatrashya runs deep into reining history. Colonels Smoking Gun (Gunner) is the all-time leading sire of reining horse money winners and a noted reining horse in his own right. Gunnatrashya’s dam is sired by Trashadeous (Be Aech Enterprise x Miss White Trash x Mr Gun Smoke) an NRHA Hall of Fame member. Be Aech Enterprise is an NRHA Hall of Fame member. But there are some interesting cutting ties as well. Gunner is the grandson of Colonel Freckles, who was the 1976 NCHA Futurity Open Champion. Miss White Trash was an NCHA Futurity Open finalist. Mr Gun Smoke, who shows up twice in Gunnatrashya’s pedigree, was the sire of 1972 NCHA Futurity Open Champion Gun Smoke’s Dream.

The double dose of Mr Gun Smoke is from Gunner’s mother, Katie Gun, who was a great-granddaughter of Mr Gun Smoke, and Nastrasha’s mother, Miss White Trash, who was a daughter of Mr Gun Smoke.

Snapsdragons shows no common ancestors between his sire and dam in five generations. We do see individuals in his pedigree that show inbreeding/linebreeding: Gunnatrashya has a breeding pattern of 5 x 4 to Mr Gun Smoke and Gunnatrashya’s dam, Natrasha, has a breeding pattern of 2 x 2 to Be Aech Enterprise as her dam is a daughter of Be Aech Enterprise. Catnaps has a breeding pattern of 4 x 3 to Doc O’Lena, and she also has a breeding pattern of 4 x 4 x 4 to Doc Bar.

Power Naps

Power Naps is by EquiStat Elite $4 Million Sire Once In A Blu Boon (Peptoboonsmal x Autumn Boon x Dual Pep), who earned $319,002 during a show career with highlights such as the 2014 NCHA Open Classic/Challenge Championship. His top-earning foals include NCHA Futurity Open Reserve Champion Badboonarising ($364,191, out of Show Biz Kitty x High Brow Cat), NCHA Futurity Open Champion All Spice ($362,303, out of Show Biz Kitty x High Brow Cat) and NCHA Open Horse of the Year Twice In Santiago ($276,587, out of Twice As Reycy x Dual Rey).

The pedigree of Once In A Blu Boon is a collateral linebreeding pedigree. Collateral relatives are full or three-quarter brothers and sisters that appear together in the same pedigree. Peptoboonsmal (Peppy San Badger x Royal Blue Boon x Boon Bar) is a three-quarter brother to Once In A Blu Boon’s dam Autumn Boon (Dual Pep x Royal Blue Boon x Boon Bar). This concentration of the blood of Peppy San Badger and Royal Blue Boon is crossed on Catnaps a daughter of High Brow Cat with her double-breeding to Doc O’Lena. Thus, the collateral linebreeding of Once In A Blu Boon is outcrossed on Catnaps.

Pedigree Note: Gingersnaps has a breeding pattern of 6 x 7 x 6 x 6 x 5 x 6 x 6 x 5 x 6 x 5 x 5 x 5 to Doc Bar. Snapdragons has a breeding pattern of 6 x 5 x 6 x 5 x 5 x 5 to Doc Bar. Power Naps has a breeding pattern of 6 x 5 x 6 x 5 x 5 x 5 to Doc Bar. Technically we are not considering these breeding patterns because Doc Bar shows up so many times these days in the fifth generation and beyond and so I concentrate on the breeding patterns that are closer that have a greater impact on the pedigree.

Gingersnaps, Snapdragons and Power Naps give us an interesting perspective on the ability of Catnaps to produce foals from stallions that bring different breeding patterns to their cross on this mare. This is a good quality we like to see in our mares.

CORRECTION: Catnaps and her siblings were bred by the R.J. Chambers family’s Flying V Ranch, of Val Verde, California. Their breeder was incorrectly attributed in an earlier version of this story.
