There was no separating Kim Muehlstaetter and Luca Fappani in the deep sand of scenic Woodside, California at the Reining By The Bay Derby Non-Pro.
The two competitors each scored a 222.5, which earned them each $5,584 and another feather in their caps. For Co-Champion Muehlstaetter, the run on TR Baby Blues also won her the Stakes Level 4, which was good for another $2,301.
“He’s just a 4-year-old, and he was just so solid on all the maneuvers. I really pushed him in the circles… enough to get a plus one, and he was right there with me, it never phased him mentally,” Muehlstaetter said. “It’s a huge pen and the harder I pushed him, the more he locked in. It was really a nice feeling and I was so happy with him being that young and giving me that much speed.”
TR Baby Blues already has a respectable track record, now boasting more than $57,000 in earnings, according to EquiStat. Sired by National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Triple Crown winner Spooks Gotta Whiz and out of Spooks N Sparks (by Smart Spook), TR Baby Blues has pulled “big paychecks” every time he’s shown, according to Muehlstaetter.
Luca Fappani and Sharp Dressed Spook are no strangers to the Reining By The Bay pen, repeating their 2019 Derby success with another championship. The Spooks Gotta Whiz son is out of Dolittle Lena (by Shining Spark).
Fappani and Sharp Dressed Spook have earned more than $96,000 together, with Sharp Dressed Spook pushing past the $115,000 threshold in lifetime earnings at this year’s Reining By The Bay, according to EquiStat.
“He was my first personal horse,” Fappani said. “He’s been great for me ever since we bought him. He taught me so much about showing and training.”
Fappani rounded up his Reining By The Bay showing with a third place finish in the Derby Level 4 Non-Pro with Icecube (SG Frozen Enterprise x Taris Designer Genes x Mr Boomerjac), scoring a 220.5 and earning $3,226.
