When Catolena Cashin In arrived at the Will Rogers Coliseum for the finals of the 2021 Kit Cat Sugar National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Super Stakes 4-Year-Old Open finals, he was following in the footsteps of his sire Reyzin The Cash. Father and son each won the first round of the NCHA Open Futurity in their first show, with Reyzin The Cash losing a calf in the second round while Catolena Cashin In made the finals.
Reyzin The Cash would return to win the 2015 NCHA Summer Spectacular Derby Open and the 2016 NCHA Summer Spectacular Classic/Challenge Open. This year, Catolena Cashin In returned to Will Rogers to win the Super Stakes 4-Year-Old Open with a 230.

The Super Stakes win for Catolena Cashin In (out of Dual Catolena x High Brow Cat) fulfilled the faith of trainer Tarin Rice and owner/breeder Joel Colgrove, of Boligee, Alabama. It also brings into focus the contribution of Dual Pep to Catolena Cashin In’s pedigree.
The Stallions: Dual Pep, Dual Rey & Reyzin The Cash
Dual Pep (Peppy San Badger x Miss Dual Doc x Doc’s Remedy) was a finalist in 20 aged events and earned seven Open and Non-Pro championships in events like the 1990 NCHA Classic Open and 1990 Classic Non-Pro Championships. He was Reserve Champion in six more events. He earned $307,384 with his longtime owner Bobby Pidgeon riding in non-pro classes and trainer Pat Earnheart riding him in the open.
Bred by Nic-A-Lode Farms of Boise, Idaho, Dual Pep ranks ninth on Equi-Stat’s all-time leading sire list with progeny earnings of more than $26 million. His leading money earner, Dual Rey Me, won $818,177 and was the NCHA Open World Champion in 2006, 2007 and 2009.
Catolena Cashin In’s sire, Reyzin The Cash, is by Dual Rey and out of Spookys Cash (by Miss N Cash) and earned $287,381 in his career. His first foals turned three last year, and have already earned more than $641,772. His sire Dual Rey (Dual Pep x Nurse Rey x Wyoming Doc) has Equi-Stat progeny earnings of more than $48 million. His three leading money winners are Special Nu Baby ($486,156), Dont Stopp Believin ($463,794) and Crey Zee ($419,015). When we step back, we see that Dual Rey is a Dual Pep cross on a Doc O’Lena-line mare, because Wyoming Doc is sired by Doc O’Lena.
The Mares: Spookys Cash, DPS Lenas Lucinda & Dual Catolena
Reyzin The Cash is the leading earner out of the mare Spookys Cash, a mare who was an NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro Reserve Champion and earned $248,410. As a broodmare, Spookys Cash produced the winners of more than $752,829. Her 16 money winners include seven sired by Dual Rey, including 2020 Cattleman’s Non-Pro Classic Champion Mean Bean ($59,739) and Spookys Catchin Reys ($89,314), a Calgary Stampede W-Series Open Reserve Champion.
Spookys Cash is out of San Starlight (Grays Starlight X Doctresa San X Doc Holliday), a mare who was an NCHA Super Stakes finalist and the dam of horses that have won more than $1.5 million. Her accomplished list of foals includes Spookys Smarty Pants, a daughter of Smart Aristocrat who was the NCHA Futurity Open Reserve Champion and earned $258,027.
The dam of Catolena Cashin In, Dual Catolena (High Brow Cat x DPS Lenas Lucinda x Dual Pep) was the winner of $37,917, including the 2012 NCHA Eastern Open Novice Championship. The Equi-Stat produce record for this mare shows three performers with earnings of $192,087 – with most of that coming from Catolena Cashin In, who has lifetime earnings of $144,245. Her sire, High Brow Cat, is not only the all-time leading cutting sire, but also ranks third all-time as the maternal grandsire of cutting earners with his daughters producing the winners of more than $45.6 million, according to Equi-Stat.
A prime example of High Brow Cat as a broodmare sire is Dont Stopp Believin, who is by Dual Rey and out of a High Brow Cat mare. Dont Stopp Believin also provides us with an example of the High Brow Cat magic cross with Dual Pep mares – a magic cross shared by the dam of Catolena Cashin In, Dual Catolena.
Catolena Cashin In’s second dam, DPS Lenas Lucinda, is a daughter of Dual Pep with earnings of $71,627. She’s the dam of horses that have earned $393,947. Her progeny includes 2016 Super Stakes Non-Pro Senior Champion CR Lucys Playgirl and multiple aged-event finalist Cats Dual Olena.
The dam of DPS Lenas Lucinda is Lenas Lucinda, a daughter of Doc O’Lena and out of Krissie Moon (by Moon Crystal) who earned $161,760, including a fourth in the 1985 NCHA Futurity Open, and whose foals earned $899,960.
The mating that produced DPS Lenas Lucinda – Dual Pep and DPS Lenas Lucinda (by Doc O’Lena) – is another mating of magic cross of Dual Pep and on Doc O’Lena line mare.
Breeding Patterns
When searching through pedigrees we look for patterns like the magic crosses and linebreeding patterns. In Catolena Cashin In’s pedigree, we see that the “magic cross” that stands out is Dual Pep on Doc O’Lena line mares. We reinforce that observation by looking at the top ten money winners sired by Dual Pep, where we see that seven of them are out of daughters or granddaughters of Doc O’Lena. This includes Dually Lena, Olena Dually and Tapt Twice – and three of his top five money winners are out of daughters of Doc O’Lena.
The goal of linebreeding is to keep a high relationship to the common ancestor or ancestors that we want duplicated in the pedigree of the linebred individual. The breeder hopes to put the desired genes into the individual he is breeding for by linebreeding to the common ancestor. Here are some examples of linebreeding to Dual Pep along with their breeding pattern to this great stallion.
- Twice In Santiago, 2020 NCHA Horse of the Year (3 x 2)
- Dual Reyish, 2017 NCHA Futurity Open Champion (4 x 3)
- Cinca Im Hot, 2017 Breeders Invitational Derby Open Champion (3 x 3)
- Countin Hot Checks, 2020 Brazos Bash Derby Open Co-Champion (4 x 4 x 4)
- Chexy Louella, 2018 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro Champion (3 x 3)
- CR Gotcha Covered, 2019 NCHA Open World Champion (3 x 4)
- Reyz Me Twice, 2012 Southern Cutting Futurity 3-Year-Old Open Champion (3 x 2)
- Crey Zee, 2018 NCHA Open Futurity Champion (2 x 3)
Our subject, Catolena Cashin In, has a breeding pattern of 2 x 3 to Dual Pep. His sire Reyzin The Cash has several performers from his first crop that carry multiple crosses to Dual Pep. They include:
- Double Zee, the 2020 West Texas Futurity Open Champion and a three-quarter sibling to Crey Zee
- Huntin Smooth Cash, a 2020 NCHA Futurity semi-finalist and finalist in several other events
- Reyzin Grace, the 2020 West Texas Futurity Limited Open Reserve Champion
- Purple Haze, an NCHA Futurity Non-Pro Semi-finalist.
When we are linebreeding to Dual Pep, we move his genes forward in the pedigree keeping his influence alive in the flow of genes. We see that in Catolena Cashin In, who is our subject for this In The Blood.
