CD Olena is remembered as a stunning athlete, lover of the spotlight and potent sire. The 1991 stallion was a National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Open Futurity Champion, earner of more than $170,000 and sire of earners totaling more than $17 million, according to Equi-Stat

Heavy Hitting Career

CD Olena was purchased as a futurity prospect by non-pro cutter Bobby Pidgeon for his Bar H Ranche near Weatherford, Texas. Sired by household name Doc O’Lena and out of CD Chica San Badger (by Peppy San Badger), CD Olena was primed to perform. 

Bar H Ranche trainer Winston Hansma took CD Olena’s reins for the 1994 NCHA Futurity, and the team brought home the $100,000 Championship prize in the Open division. The following year, CD Olena picked up checks at seven shows. An Open finalist finish in the NCHA Super Stakes Derby was good for $17,388, and a Championship in the NCHA Summer Spectacular earned him another $21,606. 

His massive effort earned him the 1995 NCHA Horse of the Year Title, and CD Olena retired with earnings of $170,706. 

Productive Progeny 

CD Olena’s first foal crop arrived in 1996, and began what turned into scores of performers. According Equi-Stat, CD Olena has 690 money-earning progeny who averaged more than $25,000 in earnings apiece. 

His leading earner is 2002 gelding Sister CD (out of Little Baby Sister by Dual Pep), whoearned a whopping $852,612 throughout his career. Other leading performers include 2003 gelding CD Boonsmal (out of Poosmal x Peptoboonsmal) who earned $341,799 and 2001 gelding Patrick La Dual (out of Patty La Dual x Dual Pep) who earned $268,573.

Carrying the Torch

CD Olena passed at the age of 19 from an aortic rupture. He is buried on the Bar H Ranche where he trained for the event he loved. 

In the breeding shed, his most successful sons has been CD Lights, a stallion out of the mare Delight Of My Life (by Grays Starlight) who is an Equi-Stat Elite $5 Million Sire. The highest-earning foals sired by CD Lights are NCHA Open World Champion A Little Bossy ($405,985, out of Pistol Smart x Smart Little Lena) and venerable reined cow horse CD Dee Vee Dee, a son of Shiners Missy Jay (by Shining Spark) who recently became the third-highest winning reined cow horse of all time.

In addition, his son CD Diamond (out of Shiners Diamond Girl x Shining Spark) won the 2012 National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Championship. In the breeding shed, CD Diamond went on to sire 2018 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Champion SJR Diamond Mist ($179, 759, out of Cat Mist x High Brow Cat).

His leading daughters include Sweet Little CD (out of Sweet Lil Lena x Smart Little Lena). Sweet Little CD has produced more than $1 million in progeny earnings, including NCHA Futurity Open Champion High Brow CD, earner of $543,161, and sire of more than $11 million, according to Equi-Stat.

Other leading daughters include Quiolena, a mare out of Quixotes Pretty Lady (by Doc Quixote) who foaled the earners of more than $842,000, including $609,140) earner and Equi-Stat Elite $1 Million Dam Quintan Blue (by Mecom Blue).
