Each year, the Quarter Horse News Tulsa Reining Classic Online Stallion Service Auction is enthusiastically watched with reiners bidding right down to the wire for some of the industry’s top sires.
Winning bidders receive a breeding to the stallion of their choice and the ensuing foals receive a free entry into a Tulsa Reining Classic Futurity when they are 3-year-olds.
In 2020, even though the Tulsa Reining Classic did not take place, the auction was hosted during the NRBC and foals from the 2021 breeding season will receive a free Tulsa Reining Classic entry in their futurity year.
As always, the benefits extend to the stallion owners. Through the support of Quarter Horse News, each stallion is entered to win one of two stallion promotion packages, custom-designed to contain great advertising placements and valued at more than $5,000. The packages include ads in Western Horseman magazine, at quarterhorsenews.com, Facebook posts on the Quarter Horse News and on the Quarter Horse News Stallion Register Facebook pages. It also includes a listing in the Stallion Register website.
This year the winners represented a stallion at the beginning of his breeding career, along with one of the most accomplished sires in reining history. They were NRBC Open Co-Champion Patriot, owned by Shannon and Hershel Reid, and legendary stallion Shining Spark, owned by Carol Rose.
Patriot (Smart Spook x Dunit A Lil Ruf x Lil Ruf Peppy) has other top finishes that include the 2019 AQHA World Show Junior Reining Championship and the 2020 NRHA Derby Level 4 Open Reserve Championship.
Say “Shiner” and everyone knows what horse you are talking about. Shining Spark is a sire whose legacy has impacted every aspect of the performance horse world.
Born in 1989, the son of Genuine Doc out of Diamond Sparkle (by Mr Diamond Dude) was the 1993 AQHA World Champion Junior Reining horse and the 1994 NRHA Derby Champion. He retired to stud with more than $62,000 lifetime earnings.
Shining Spark is now a Hall of Fame inductee and $5 Million Sire in the National Reining Horse Association, the National Reined Cow Horse Association’s All Time Leading Sire and the association’s first $3 Million Sire. He also is an Equi-Stat Elite $9 Million Sire.
