Holly Cat Carrera entered the Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity fence work with the lead, and the 3-year-old mare and trainer Zane Davis kept it that way with a 225-point run that clinched the title Sunday, Sept. 20.
The Equi-Stat Elite $1 Million Dollar Rider from Blackfoot, Idaho, finished with a composite of 663.5 (217 herd/221.5 rein/225 cow) to take the championship check of $30,000.
“She is a solid herd horse and I pushed her pretty hard in the reining and she had the high score of 88 horses,” he said. “Her one fault had been fence work; she’s been a little scared of the cows, but she came through and did what I asked on a tough cow.”
Lightning 7 Cattle Co. purchased the mare as a 2-year-old off the internet and sent her right to Davis. He remembers thinking the mare bred by Garrett Johnson, of Edmond, Oklahoma, was a pretty black horse, but wasn’t initially impressed.
“For the first year I kept telling them I didn’t think we had a winner,” he said. “She was too good to send home, so I kept her thinking she would have success in the smaller futurities.”
In August, the mare finished second at the Utah Reined Cow Horse Association Futurity – missing the win only by a high-fence score tie-breaker. There she earned her first $2,163 and stepped up. The plan now is that Davis will show her at the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Snaffle Bit Futurity this fall.
“She just started getting better and better every day,” he said.
The mare is sired by World’s Greatest Horseman Champion Hickory Holly Time (One Time Pepto x Hickorys Holly Cee x Docs Hickory), who has fathered earners of more than $287, 794. She is the first money earner recorded in Equi-Stat for her dam Carrera Cat (Metallic Cat x Lively Dual x Dual Rey).
