Of the 27 horses in the The Bonanza 4-Year-Old Open Finals on Monday, only had yet to step into the herd, stallion Hit Tha Flo and Matt Miller.
Miller maneuvered Hit Tha Flo, whom he had raised from a weanling and trained himself, to a 221.5, edging out Sanctus and Rodrigo Taboga by a half-point at the brand-new Bell County Expo.
To the winners went $23,677.
“I knew I had a good horse,” Miller said afterward. “I wasn’t real happy with my draw because we were so late, but luckily I had two cows I liked a lot that were still in there.”
With lively cattle, Bonanza competitors were hard-pressed to make smart picks.
“I had my mind set that I was going to go cut those two cows. And they were my first and second [cuts]. My first cow was really good, second cow was a little touchy, but luckily he’s a good horse and he’s got the ability to go trap a cow pretty easy so he makes [the cows] look better than what they are,” Miller said.
Sired by Equi-Stat Elite $7 million sire Dual Smart Rey, Hit Tha Flo, or “Kion,” is out of $480,308 producing mare Miss Woody Two Shoes (by High Brow Cat). Bred by Lannie Louise Mecom of Avondale, Colorado, Kion’s maternal line is what drew Miller to the bay stallion.
“I showed a full sister to him a few years ago, Lou Lou Louise, that was a nice mare and I’ve trained a few other ones that have been out of his mother.”
