‘Special’ PRF Peptos Smart Cat Pulls Snaffle Bit Double Duty

As Here Comes The Boon was working his way to the pinnacle of achievement at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity® last week, another red roan stallion was also generating his share of intrigue.

PRF Peptos Smart Cat was working his tail off in both Non-Pro and Open divisions and doing it well.

“Not very often do you come across horses like that,” said owner and non-pro rider Tori Simons of Santa Ynez, California. “He’s just a very unique horse … a special horse. Justin Wright found him for me as a yearling. From Day 1, he just wanted to be a good horse. He was good-minded and wants to do all three events really well.

“He’s probably the best horse I’ve ever owned.”

In the Non-Pro, Peptos and Simons, who has been showing in the aged events for about four years, combined to win $7,282 for a sixth-place finish, as well as $4,472 for a fourth in the Intermediate Non-Pro. As Reserve Novice Non-Pro champion, the duo collected $2,766.

Jared Jones showed him in the Intermediate Open and they posted a 638 composite in the finals, including a 222 and 220 in the herd and rein work, ranking first and second in each. They followed that, however, with a 196 in the cows, dropping him all the way to 19thoverall.

Fatigue from showing twice as many times as his competitors likely was his undoing in faltering in the cows on Saturday night.

“There definitely was a little” fatigue, said Jones. “He tries his guts out for you. There definitely was a little. He had three runs [the day before]. He’s dang sure tired.”

Jones, Simons said, deserves the most credit “as far as putting him on time, getting him shown and training him.”

The Peter Deleeuw-bred steed, foaled in Paige, Texas, is by WR This Cats Smart and out of Wild Francine (x Peptoboonsmal).

WR This Cats Smart’s top Equi-Stat earnings performers are Velvets Revolver ($277,000), Teles Bout This Cat ($239,791), Cyndi Cat ($189,863), El Gato Bonito ($183,698), Tuckers Smart Cat ($182,566).

WR This Cats Smart has sired 598 performers, who have an Equi-Stat earnings record of $12.7 million. Peptos maternal grandsire, Peptoboonsmal, has fathered 903 performers, who have won more than $27 million, including Little Pepto Gal ($526,229), Copaspepto ($480,290), One Time Pepto ($331,097), Once In A Blu Boon ($316,564), Pepto Boom ($316,324), Peptos Stylish Miss ($305,712).

Once In A Blu Boon is the father of Here Comes The Boon, the 2019 Snaffle Bit Futurity champion.

“I love him,” Jones said of Peptos. “He’s a really super-talented horse. He can go forever if you wanted him, but he’s not hot really. He’s always there when you call on him.”

Said Simons: “I was lucky to come across him.”
