Im Countin Checks Sweeps Past $5 Million Milestone

Im Countin Checks is rising in the ranks of National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) sires, recently surpassing the $5 million mark.

The 2002 sorrel stallion, who is owned by the Circle Y Ranch in Millsap Texas, was bred by Karen Freeman of Clarksville, Tennessee.

Earning more than half a million dollars during his time in the show pen, Im Countin Checks finished third in the 2005 NCHA Futurity Open, banking more than $120,000 with rider Matt Gaines. All told, Im Countin Checks or “Checkers” has lifetime earnings of $514,757.

Nancy Pearce, who manages Circle Y Ranch alongside Penny Youngblood is ecstatic for the stallion’s accomplishment.

“We’re so proud of him, because when we first bought him in 2012, he had about $150,000 in get earnings,” she explained. “We had high hopes for him to breed a lot of mares, and he’s done that. To get him to the five million-dollar mark for Penny [Youngblood] and I was just thrilling, it was a dream come true, because he’s such a good guy.”

In the breeding barn, Checkers has proven his producing ability, touting the title of Top 15 NCHA Sire for the past five consecutive years. The Equi-Stat Lifetime Cutting Statistics ranks him as No. 41 on the all-time producing cutting sire list. Pearce aspires to get Checkers to $7.5 million in produce earnings.

“We’ve been real fortunate to have some great performers out there in the hands of good trainers,” she said emphatically. “His top magic cross is on High Brow Cat daughters.”

His stud book has ridden the wave of his popularity, with Circle Y Ranch reporting a full stud book from the years 2016-2019. Checkers is marketed as possessing “the perfect outcross pedigree,” in advertisements. He is sired by Smart Lil Ricochet and out of Autumn Boon (by Dual Pep), who produced $1.9 million in offspring. As of Sept. 13, Checkers has 207 earners averaging $23,537 each, according to Equi-Stat

Checkers boasts nine offspring with more than $100,000 in earnings. His top-earning get have proved their worth in the cutting, working cowhorse, ranch reining and ranch riding arenas.
