Elite Producer Dun It For Chex Dies at 23

One of the most influential mares in modern reining has died.

Dun It For Chex, a millionaire producer by the great Hollywood Dun It and out of Silver N Blue Chex (by Docs Silver N Blue), was humanely euthanized on Monday night. She was 23.

Although the gray mare did not have a show record of her own, she foaled one prize-winning reiner after another. At the time of her death, she was producing winners for owner Cardinal Hill Training Center of Aubrey, Texas.

“She was a sweet mare,” said Franco Bertolani, Cardinal’s head trainer. “She gave so much to us. She was a tremendous producer as a mare.”

The mare had as a companion the last few years a goat, who stayed with her in her air-conditioned stall, Bertolani said.

Top Producer

Bred by Pat Warren, Dun It For Chex had an Equi-Stat offspring record of 21 money-earning progeny with winners of $1,045,561. They earned an average of $49,789.

The mare’s sons and daughters banked that money with top finishes at the NRHA Futurity and Derby, the FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) and the National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC).

Dun It For Chex eclipsed the $1 million mark as a producer at the NRHA Derby in June.

“I’m happy she was still alive for it,” Bertolani said.

Tops among her earners are NRHA Futurity Level 4 Open Reserve champions Dun It For Whizkey ($259,119, by Topsail Whiz) and Starbucks Sidekick ($195,150, by Smart Starbuck).

“Every year, we started 12 to 15 2-year-olds and at the end, her babies are the best ones,” Bertolani said. “It doesn’t matter how they start; at the end, they were always the best ones.”

Lasting Legacy

Dun It For Chex may continue to add to her legacy despite of her death. With frozen eggs in its possession, Cardinal hopes to breed the mare for several more years.

Earlier this summer, Dun It For Chex joined Ebony Shines as the only matriarchs to achieve the status of NRHA Million Dollar Dam. In 2018, the mare was inducted into the NRHA Hall of Fame.

“The only thing I can tell you about her is we changed the studs, [and] she always gave us good ones,” Bertolani said.
