An Equi-Stat Elite $3 Million Sire has been humanely euthanized. Kit Dual was 25 years old.
A son of Equi-Stat Elite $25 Million Sire Dual Pep and $524,237 producer Pretty Little Kitty (by Smart Little Lena), Kit Dual was laid to rest early Saturday morning, according to a post on owner Jeff Capps’ Facebook page.
“Earlier in the week, ‘Kit’ sustained an injury to his spinal cord/back,” Capps said in his post. “He got down in the stall [Friday] afternoon and could not get back up. … After some pain killers, sedation and mainlining some DMSO, he sat up and went to eating hay and things started looking hopeful but again tried to get up and dislocated his left knee. I made the decision then and there to humanely put him down.”
Kit Dual as a Performer
Kit Dual, who retired from the cutting pen in 2000, was a talented performer and debuted with Kathy Daughn at the 1997 National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity. The duo marked a final-round 222 to secure a third-place finish. The performance garnered a total paycheck of more than $100,000.
As a 4-year-old, Kit Dual consistently marked big scores, including a 220.5 that secured the NCHA Super Stakes Open Reserve Championship and a 226 to win the Steamboat Springs Derby Open with Paul Hansma. The following season, Hansma and the stallion picked up the NCHA Super Stakes Classic Open Reserve title and tied for sixth in the NCHA Summer Spectacular Classic/Challenge Open.
Kit Dual was on his way to becoming a prolific sire in the cutting horse industry by 2000, when he posted his last checks to Equi-Stat. That final push took his lifetime earnings to $251,791.
Kit Dual as a Sire
Through early August, Kit Dual sired 194 money-earners with $3.2 million in cumulative earnings. His offspring have garnered checks in cutting, reining, reined cow horse, ranch versatility, roping and barrel racing.
Duals Play Kit (out of Playgiarism x Freckles Playboy) is Kit Dual’s No. 1 offspring with $263,029. She is followed closely by KD Shorty (out of Shorty Lena Sue x Shorty Lena), whose Equi-Stat record totaled $236,352. Both mares are also elite producers with progeny earnings of $384,914 and $798,790, respectively.
“My heart will be forever broken. Many just don’t realize how much I loved this horse,” Capps wrote. “Your Legacy will live on thru sons, daughters, granddaughters and grandsons, and future foals from frozen semen.” [sic]
