Tom Herold Gains Two Titles at The Cattlemen’s

It wasn’t enough for Tom Herold to win one title at The Cattlemen’s Derby & Classic on March 10. After riding Simon Sez to the 4-Year-Old Amateur title, he came back in the 4-Year-Old Unlimited Amateur with “Simon” to also take that Championship home to West Point, Iowa.

Describing himself as “very surprised” to win two classes, Herold praised his horse, who he bought as a 2-year-old through a private sale at the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity.

“He’s been a really good horse to work with,” Herold said of the Dual Smart Rey stallion. “He’s got a really good mind and he’s really laid-back, so things don’t bother him.”

The duo first marked a 222 in the Amateur, then rode to a 220 in the Unlimited Amateur. Overall, they garnered $7,600, which pushed the stallion’s lifetime earnings to almost $20,000 and Herold’s to $124,360.

“I was third in the set [in the Unlimited Amateur finals], and I had already ridden him in the Amateur so I didn’t have to do much loping or anything to get him ready for that,” Herold said. “[In the Amateur], he was pretty much the same. He doesn’t take a lot of riding to get him ready, which is good for me.

“R.L. Chartier helped me pick the cattle, and the herd help was great. In both classes they were wonderful, and we were able to get him set up just where we wanted to get the cows we wanted, and it worked out. I can’t be happier with that.”

In addition to Chartier, Herold thanked Boyd Rice, Sean Flynn and Jonathan Rogers for their help with his cattle.

Simon, who has been in training with Dirk Blakesley, is out of Shes A Smooth Cat (by Smooth As A Cat), who has no career earnings of her own but has produced winners of more than $94,000. Herold expected to double up on the stallion with Blakesley at the NCHA Super Stakes, with him showing Simon in the Unlimited Amateur and the Amateur, and Blakesley in the Open.
