NRHA Markel Futurity Sales See Several Six-Figure Sellers

After three days of top-notch horseflesh passing through the sale ring, the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Markel Futurity Sales wrapped up with three six-figure sellers.

Hip No. 2004, Shine Colt Shine, topped the sales overall when he garnered a $220,000 bid for consignor St-Onge Reining Horses. The 2-year-old palomino colt was catalogued during the second day’s session, which was revamped this year into the Futurity Prospect & Select Broodmare Sale.

Shine Colt Shine, who is by 2011 National Reining Breeders Classic Derby Level 4 Open Champion Shine Chic Shine ($148,714), was purchased via an online bid by Gaynia Revenberg. The colt is out of the Colonels Smoking Gun (Gunner) mare Gunners Miss Oak.

Gunners Miss Oak, who has no show earnings of her own recorded in Equi-Stat, is the dam of five foals of performance age, three of which are 3-year-olds. Her only money-earner to date is Shines Smokin Gun, a 4-year-old full brother to Shine Colt Shine whose record reflects $5,191.

Shine Colt Shine’s second dam is Docs Peppy Oak RB (Doc’s Oak x Peppy Sue RB x Peponita), an earner of $348 and a producer of $60,320. Her performers include $45,968-earner Gun Dealer (by Gunner) and $9,765-earner Gunners Smokin Oak (by Gunner).

Starr Trooper, who was catalogued as Hip No. 3085, was the sale’s second-highest seller overall and the top-selling yearling. The hammer fell at $115,000 for the bay colt, who was purchased in partnership by Jim and Tammie Putman, along with friends Bruce and Kim Voigt.

Consigned by Toyon Ranch, Starr Trooper (A Sparkling Vintage x Starjac Miss x Hollywood Jac 86) was a special offering. He is a full brother to Platinum Vintage, an earner of more than $233,000, and Vintage Glamour, whose lifetime earnings total more than $60,000. Their dam, who has produced offspring with more than $300,000 in cumulative earnings, is an all-time leading producer in the NRHA.

The third six-figure seller was Hip No. 3042, Gunnabememorable, a double-registered yearling colt (out of Memorable Walla Whiz x Walla Walla Whiz) consigned by Pro Fit Equine, agent for Lorenzo Lotti. Dickson Ruckman signed the $100,000 ticket for the son of Equi-Stat Elite $2 Million Sire Gunnatrashya.
