High Brow CD Tops Inaugural Evening Session

Equi-Stat Elite $7 Million Rider Austin Shepard fought back tears as he spoke on behalf of Hip No. 4050, High Brow CD, during The Evening Session at the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity Sales.

The 2004 sorrel stallion, whose sire record totals more than $8.6 million, was the highlight of Western Bloodstock’s The Evening Session, which replaced the Select Yearling Sale & Gala with an offering of breeding stallions, broodmares and embryos. The hammer fell at $401,000 for the Grace Ranch-consigned son of High Brow Cat. The seller retained 10 lifetime breedings from the deal.

High Brow CD (out of Sweet Little CD x CD Olena), who was headed to Blackville, South Carolina, with new owner Shank Collins of Home Place Horse & Cattle Co., was the 2007 NCHA Futurity Open Champion with Shepard at the helm. The duo went on to tie for the 2008 NCHA Super Stakes Open win and the stallion was named the NCHA Horse of the Year at the end of the season.

The last check to post to High Brow CD’s Equi-Stat performance record was in 2010. His first foals were born the year prior, and they have since earned him a top 25 sire ranking in the Equi-Stat Lifetime Cutting Statistics. His leading performers are: Reyzin ($420,801, out of Miss Reycine x Dual Rey); Some Kinda Highbrow ($417,470, out of Some Kinda Memories x Smart Little Lena); and Crafty With Cows ($327,855, out of Miss Haulin Hickory).

The session’s second-highest seller was Hip No. 4045, Magic Metallic. Sold as a package with an embryo by Hottish and a paid booking to the Equi-Stat Elite $1 Million Sire for 2019, the 2010 bay mare brought $370,000 from buyer Stella Swanson.

Magic Metallic, consigned by Waco Bend Ranch Ltd., is by Equi-Stat Elite $23 Million Sire Metallic Cat and out of million-dollar producer Sweet Abra (by Abrakadabracre). She is an earner of more than $160,000, including finals berths at many major limited-age events, making her Sweet Abra’s second-highest-earning daughter.

Sweet Abra’s top-earing offspring is NCHA Open Horse of the Year Metallic Rebel, a full brother to Magic Metallic with more than $437,000 in lifetime earnings. He is followed by full sister Magistic Moon, a 2011 mare with an Equi-Stat record of $187,630.

Money Talks Smart, who was catalogued as Hip No. 4052, brought a final bid of $100,000 to round out the top three sellers in The Evening Session. Consigned by Beechfork Ranch, the 2002 sorrel mare (out of Money Talks Rio x Doc Quixote) sold with two embryos – one by Metallic Cat and one by Purdy Boy Flash. Bobby Patton, of Rocking P Ranch, signed the ticket on the daughter of Smart Mate with more than a half-million dollars in offspring earnings.
