Two Stallions Hit NRCHA Million Dollar Sire Status

Two top-notch stallions joined the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Million Dollar Sire league: Metallic Cat and Smooth As A Cat. The offspring of these elite sires, both sired by High Brow Cat, have exceeded the prestigious seven-figure milestone inside the reined cow horse industry.

Metallic Cat (out of Chers Shadow x Peptoboonsmal) is the 18th stallion to achieve NRCHA Million Dollar Sire status, with more than $1.4 million in offspring cow horse earnings. The 2005 red roan stallion, referred to as “Denver,” has lifetime earnings of $637,711, with a limited amount of showing. National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Hall of Fame member and $3 Million Dollar Rider Beau Galyean piloted Metallic Cat to several prestigious titles, including the 2008 NCHA Futurity Open Championship and 2009 NCHA Horse of the Year, for previous owners Alvin and Becky Fults. The incredible duo made just 12 trips to the show pen, never missing a finals.

After Metallic Cat’s impeccable show career, he retired to the breeding barn, where he has quickly become one of the Western performance horse industry’s all-time leading sires. While Metallic Cat is a well-established name in the cutting horse world, closing in on $19 million in NCHA money-earners, his impact is also greatly felt within the reined cow horse industry. The stallion reached this incredible achievement in just five foal crops.

Metallic Cat’s offspring are known for their athleticism and cow smarts. His first foal crop debuted at the 2013 futurities and have been dominating the demanding triathlon of reined cow horse ever since.

In the fall of 2017, Metallic Cat was purchased by Bobby Patton, of the Rocking P Ranch in Weatherford, Texas.

Ninety-four Metallic Cat offspring are reined cow horse money-earners, and the top five have collectively earned more than one-half million dollars.

  1. Call Me Mitch (out of Miss Hickory Hill x Doc’s Hickory) 2011S – $166,092
  2. Cats Picasso (out of Playboys Vixen x Hickoryote) 2012S – $150,336
  3. Metallic Train (out of Sparking Train x Shining Spark) 2013M – $111,178
  4. Metallic Masterpiece (out of Kings Masterpiece x Peppys San Badger) 2011S – $64,989
  5. Shinen Metallic Cat (out of Winenshineme x Shining Spark) 2012S – $60,523

With more than $1.1 million in reined cow horse earnings, Smooth As A Cat offspring have proven their sire’s stellar genetics and diversity, making him the 19th stallion to achieve NRCHA Million Dollar Sire status.

Before becoming one of the Western performance horse industry’s top sires, Smooth As A Cat (out of Shes Pretty Smooth x Wheeling Peppy) first made his mark in the show pen, collecting more than $500,000 in NCHA open and non-pro earnings. In addition to his impressive show career, and being a finalist 43 times, Smooth As A Cat was also named 2005 NCHA Horse of the Year.

After several successful years in the show pen, Smooth As A Cat retired to the breeding barn, completely sound and ready for the next phase of his life. The stallion’s first foal crop arrived in 2004 and proved to be a success, when all seven American Quarter Horse Association-registered foals became money-earners, making him a 100 percent producer right out of the gate.

Smooth As A Cat has gone on to produce more than $25 million in earners, across all disciplines, and is the only sire to produce two NCHA Open Horses of the Year. Smooth As A Cat’s pleasant disposition, willingness to train and athletic ability have become some of the most desired traits for breeders, owners and competitors.

Smooth As A Cat remains in the Manion family, currently owned by Kyle Manion, of Aubrey, Texas.

With 83 reined cow horse money-earners, the top five Smooth As A Cat offspring have earned more than one-half million dollars.
