Heavy Duty Chex made big news when he and Sarah Locker won back-to-back National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) Level 4 Non-Pro championships in 2015 and 2016. So, Heavy Duty Chex is no stranger to success in the arena. He has lifetime earnings of $133,555, according to Equi-Stat.

But Heavy Duty Chex’s latest achievement must be special, as he and Equi-Stat Elite $1 Million Rider Casey Deary have qualified to compete on the 2018 United States Reining Team. They will represent their country in the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) World Equestrian Games (WEG) in September.

Heavy Duty Chex is owned by breeder Hilldale Farms, of Brashear, Texas. Hilldale Farm is a family-run operation with Tammye Hutton and her children – Sara Locker, Jessicah Keller and David Hutton – all part of the operation.

The pedigree of Heavy Duty Chex (Nu Chex To Cash x Rondas Tio x Teninolena Badger) brings us to the influence of Colonel Freckles for the third time. His pedigree also gives us an example of the Doc Bar influence through female descendants.

Nu Chex to Cash

Nu Chex To Cash (Nu Cash x Amarilla Chex x Bueno Chex) was the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) High-Point Reining Horse and the High-Point Working Cow Horse in 1999. His Palomino Horse Breeders Association (PHBA) show record includes a 1996 World Championship in reining and a 1996 World Championship in working cow horse.

Then in 2002 with Keller in the saddle, Nu Chex To Cash was the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Limited Open and Intermediate Open World Champion. They were also the 2002 NRHA Non-Pro Reserve World Champions and the Intermediate Non-Pro Reserve World Champions.

The sire record for Nu Chex To Cash shows him to be an Equi-Stat Elite $3 Million Reining Sire and a sire of money-winners with nearly $350,000 in reined cow horse. His leading reining earners include Lil Joe Cash ($279,077), the 2011 NRHA Futurity Level 4 Open Champion; Big Chex To Cash ($219,265); and Wimpys Little Step ($203,865), the 2002 NRHA Futurity Open Champion. His No. 1 reined cow horse money-winner is NMSU Truckin Chex ($185,006), the 2004 National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Non-Pro Bridle World Champion.

Nu Cash (Colonel Freckles x Nu Rendition x Nu Bar) was the 1987 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Champion. He is the sire of horses with reined cow horse earnings totaling $1.3 million, with three of his offspring winning the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity. They are: The Nu Colonel ($66,242) in 1995; Shesa Lota Cash ($59,825) in 1996 and Smart Little Cash ($84,750) in 1997.

The introduction of Nu Cash gives us a new branch of the Colonel Freckles sire line with an emphasis on reined cow horses showing the versatility of his line. When we look at the role of Colonel Freckles as an paternal grandsire of reined cow horses in Equi-Stat, we see his sons have sired the winners of more than $3 million. A leading money-winner from these foals is Miss Plain Plain ($97,687), a two-time World’s Greatest Horseman Reserve Champion with money won in cutting, as well.

We have seen that Colonel Freckles was an outcross on the Doc Bar mare lines. The dam of Nu Cash was Nu Rendition (Nu Bar x Doc’s Rendition). Nu Bar was sired by Doc Bar and out of Teresa Tivio, by Poco Tivio. Doc’s Rendition was sired by Doc’s Dee Bar (Doc Bar x Lura Tivio x Puro Tivio). This gives Nu Rendition a 2 X 3 breeding pattern to Doc Bar. Thus, we see an inbred Doc Bar mare crossed on Colonel Freckles. This gives us our first example of Doc Bar as an influence through the mare’s side in the pedigree of Heavy Duty Chex.

Amarilla Chex (Bueno Chex x Karlye King x Radel King) was a reining mare with 12 AQHA points and a Register of Merit. She is the dam of four money-earners of $188,167 recorded in Equi-Stat. Along with Nu Chex To Cash, her foals include Boomboomvoodoodaddy ($70,031), the 2005 PHBA World Championship in Open and Amateur reining; and Bueno San Lena ($50,526), the 1995 All American Quarter Horse Congress Limited Futurity Open Champion.

Karlye King was an unshown mare. She is the dam of Linda Chex, the 1986 AQHA Reserve World Champion in reining. The dam of Karlye King was Doc Bar Laurie, by Doc Bar. This gives Heavy Duty Chex a second Doc Bar mare in his pedigree.

Rondas Tio (Teninolena Badger x Docs Ronda x Doc’s Rickashay) is an unshown mare. She is the dam of 12 money-earners that have earned $226,336, according to Equi-Stat, and seven of them were sired by Nu Chex To Cash. In addition to Heavy Duty Chex, they include Teninolena Chex ($37,119), the 2014 AQHA Working Cow Horse Select World Champion; and Moonlite Chex ($20,123), who picked up ancillary titles in the Novice Non-Pro at the 2016 NRBC.

Teninolena Badger (Peppy San Badger x Teninolena x Doc O’Lena) has lifetime earnings of $15,717 recorded in Equi-Stat. He is the sire of foals that have earned $231,344. His leading money-winners include Teninolena Shay ($77,582), Teninolenas Angel ($38,686) and Shay Mon Tenino ($31,122). As a broodmare sire, Teninolena Badger has sired the dams of winners of nearly $515,000, including Like It That Way ($85,992) and Above Da Best Tenino ($43,666).

Doc O’Lena (Doc Bar x Poco Lena x Poco Tivio), the sire of Teninolena, gives us our next Doc Bar influence on this pedigree. It is the third Doc Bar cross to come through the mare’s side of the pedigree for Heavy Duty Chex.

Docs Ronda (Doc’s Rickashay x Miss Yucca Cee x Yucca Marion) was an unshown mare. She is the dam of two money-earners in Equi-Stat. Rondalena, a son of Docs Ronda, has earned $22,228 in reining and reined cow horse. The gelding was a finalist in the 1997 NRHA Futurity Open and Limited Open.

Doc’s Rickashay (Doc’s Dee Bar x Ricka Tina x Ricky Taylor) gives the pedigree of Heavy Duty Chex a breeding pattern of 5 X 4 to Doc’s Dee Bar (Doc Bar x Lura Tivio x Puro Tivio). The Doc Bar influence on cutting has been phenomenal, but he could sire versatility and Doc’s Dee Bar shows that in his show record. He earned his AQHA Championship, Superior in halter and a Superior in Western pleasure. All told, he accumulated 170 halter points and 273 performance points in cutting (3), tie-down roping (4), heeling (10), Western riding (14), hunt seat (36), working cow horse (11), heading (4), reining (13) and Western pleasure (178).

Doc’s Rickashay is the last link to Doc Bar and another connection through the mare’s side in the pedigree of Heavy Duty Chex. When we look at the pedigree of Heavy Duty Chex, we see the linebreeding to Doc Bar with a breeding pattern of 5 X 6 X 5 X 5 X 5 and how Doc Bar influences the pedigree through his daughters, granddaughters and great-granddaughters that appear in the pedigree. This is a very common pedigree pattern for the great stallions that have shaped the breed. We often find that the influence of these stallions comes through their female descendants as much as it comes through their sons.
