Cade McCutcheon Slides to Tulsa Reining Classic Derby Non-Pro Title

The Tulsa Reining Classic drew reiners from all over the country to Oklahoma Aug. 27-Sept. 2. Non-pros duked it out Aug. 30 in the Ford Truck Arena, and after 79 exhibitors went through the ring, Cade McCutcheon and Me And Julio (PT) stood on top with their score of 220.5.

“[It feels] pretty good,” McCutcheon said. “We just bought him after the NRBC [National Reining Breeders Classic] this year, and at the [National Reining Horse Association] Derby, we were still getting to know each other. We had a little trouble, so it was good to get this run before we went into the majors next year, build up confidence and get together.”

“Julio,” who was bred by Turnabout Farm, is by Gunners Special Nite and out of Darlins Not Painted (PT) (by Smokin Chic Olena [PT]). He is a full or half-sibling to nine other money-earners, including Baileys Not Painted (PT) ($74,498) and My Darlin Tonite (PT) ($39,772). With the winner’s check of $4,969, the gelding’s earnings stand at almost $40,000.

McCutcheon, who recently earned a spot on the United States’ team for the 2018 World Equestrian Games, has lifetime earnings of $420,480. This was not his first time in the winner’s circle in Tulsa, as he and Custom Made Gun won the 2016 Derby Level 4 Non-Pro title.

“I always enjoy this horse show because there’s a derby and a futurity so I can bring them all and show them all,” McCutcheon added. “It’s an easy horse show and a good schedule.”

Gina Schumacher guided Slideomatic Spook to a 219 to take the Reserve Championship. She and the stallion (Spooks Gotta Whiz x Shiney Diamond Lady x Shining Spark), who was bred by Bobby Lewis, collected $3,024.
