McQuay Stables announced Thursday morning its plan for a dispersal of its legendary reining horse program.

Scheduled for Friday, Sept. 28, the McQuay Stables Dispersal Sale will be held in conjunction with the Legacy Reining Sales at Cardinal Hill Training Center in Aubrey, Texas. The liquidation will include weanlings, yearlings, 2-year-olds, 3-year-olds, broodmares in foal and stallions, including 2014 World Equestrian Games Team USA gold medalist and $150,368-earner Yellow Jersey (Wimpys Little Step x Ms Clara Melody x Mr Melody Jac).

Owned by National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Hall of Fame members Tim and Colleen McQuay, McQuay Stables has been a household name in reining for decades. The couple has played a role with some of the industry’s highest-earning horses through their breeding and training programs. They have helped shape the sport with NRHA Hall of Fame stallions Equi-Stat Elite $7 Million Sire Hollywood Dun It and Equi-Stat Elite $10 Million Sire Colonels Smoking Gun (Gunner).

“This was not an easy decision to make, but we feel it’s time to slow down and enjoy our grandchildren,” the McQuays said in a statement. “We will not be closing our doors; we will remain very active in both the reining horse industry and the hunter/jumper world.”

The McQuays, who are also known for their work innovating show management and developing new classes in reining, ranked third as owners and fifth as breeders in November’s 2017 Equi-Stat Lifetime Reining Statistics. With such deep-rooted involvement, they intend to continue on a smaller scale.

According to a McQuay Stables statement, “Tim and Colleen will be available for training, lessons, horse sales, consulting and clinics as usual. They will remain involved in the production and management of both the National Reining Breeders Classic and the Tulsa Reining Classic. They will also continue to work with the National Reining Horse Association, US Equestrian and the US Hunter Jumper Association.”

A complete list of consignments to the McQuay Stables Dispersal Sale will be available in the coming weeks. Updates on the session can be found at legacysale.com and on Facebook.
