Dreamy Start for Huss in USEF Selection Trials

The first round of the FEI World Equestrian Games USEF Selection Trials CRI3* is in the books, and an Arizona reiner is leading the pack.

Dan Huss, of Scottsdale, rode Ms Dreamy to a 224 on Thursday during the first round of the event held during the Carolina Classic at Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring, North Carolina. The event is part of the selection process for Team USA.

One of only two mares in the field, the 8-year-old by Magnum Chic Dream out of A Gal With A Gun (by Colonels Smoking Gun [Gunner]) laid down her round-winning score in the third set. Ms Dreamy entered the competition with an Equi-Stat record of $171,398, and was the 2014 American Quarter Horse Association Amateur Reining World Champion. She is owned by Frederick Christen of Whitehouse, Ohio, and was bred by Jana Leigh Simons, of Aubrey, Texas.

Two were tied at 222.5 for the second-highest score of the go-round: Custom Made Gun and Cade McCutcheon and Wind Er Up Wimp and Emily Emerson.

McCutcheon – whose mother, father and grandfather have all represented Team USA in reining – and the 2011 son of Gunner made their mark in the third set. The palomino out of Custom Made Dunit (by Hollywood Dun It) is owned and bred by McQuay Stables, of Tioga, Texas.

Emerson rode Susan Geiger’s 2009 stallion (Wimpys Little Step x Wind Er Up Doc x Docs Sidewinder) to the co-highest score of the go-round in the final set of the night. Bred by Vaughn Zimmerman, of Springfield, Missouri, Wind Er Up Wimp entered the competition with an Equi-Stat record of $17,869.

The second round of the trials will be held Saturday night. Placings from the trials will factor in to who is chosen to represent the United States at the FEI World Equestrian Games Sept. 10-23 at the Tryon International Equestrian Center.
