The brand new Dennis Moreland hand-crafted headstalls with rawhide braid and kangaroo accents are beautiful! The Slot Ear Headstall with Rawhide and Black Ring Knots http://bit.ly/2tsHloD and the Slot Ear Headstall with Rawhide and Black Interweave http://bit.ly/2ttKiW2 are both made of 5/8 inch race track harness leather. They’re lined with oil-tanned lining leather to feel good against your horse’s face and accented with rawhide and kangaroo braid.
Race track harness is very dense, fine grained leather which makes it strong but flexible. This is the best leather I can buy. The headstall has a beveled stainless steel adjustment buckle. I sew the leather pieces together below the buckle to keep the buckle from slipping. The headstalls have been edged, hand-rubbed, treated with Neatsfoot Oil and hand-rubbed again. A beautiful rawhide design is hand braided on the cheeks and at the bottom of the ear piece. Black kangaroo rings or interweave pattern are braided within the rawhide.
These are such nice easy headstalls to slip on your horse and be on your way. The slot ear is sized right to fit small and large horses. Not only are they beautiful but they’re extremely well built and will last for years.
To make a doubled and stitched headstall with rawhide braid I start by taking the race track harness and the oil-tanned lining leathers and split them to the correct thicknesses. Next I glue the 2 pieces and carefully cut the desired shapes. Finally it’s stitched together. Doubled and stitched leather is more durable and longer lasting than single ply leather and also has a nice eye-catching appearance. The doubled & stitched items are not thicker than single ply leather so still have that good feel in your hands and on the horse.
Once the leather headstall is completed the rawhide and kangaroo is braided on the headstall. The rawhide and kangaroo strips are carefully cut by hand to 3/32nd of an inch. The strips are hand beveled on all 4 edges, treated with rawhide cream and braided on the headstall with care. The beveling of the strips and accuracy of the braiding are critical for the braid to feel smooth to the touch and good against your horse’s face.
My handmade headstalls are made with fit, function and longevity in mind. The quality and care in the crafting coupled with the beautiful design make these eye-catching wherever you ride!
